Men's Basketball Falls at Penn, 77-57

12.10.22 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Ice-cold shooting from Temple late in the second half enabled Penn to get past the Owls, 77-57, in both teams' Big 5 finale Saturday at The Palestra.  The Quakers snapped Temple's four-game win streak, and the Owls now sit at 6-5 (3-1 Big 5) while Penn improves to 6-7 (1-3 Big 5).

Despite the loss, the Cherry and White still holds a share of the Big 5 title, with the outcome of the Villanova-Saint Joseph's game to determine if Temple will hold the title outright.

Khalif Battle scored 14 points to lead Temple, with Jamille Reynolds (13) and Hysier Miller (10) rounding out the double-figure scorers. Jordan Dingle, who set a Big 5 single season points record (120 pts, 30.0 ppg) in city-series games, led all players with 30 points.

First Half
> The game was tight through the first media timeout, with neither team finding more than three points of separation.
> Penn took a five-point lead (16-11) off a trey from Dingle with 12 minutes left in the half.
> A Zach Hicks trey cut the lead to 16-14, but the Quakers hit a three of their own to put the lead back at five with just under 10 minutes left.
> The teams traded baskets but Temple never let Penn go on a run, and the Owls pulled within one (21-20) on a second-chance layup from Reynolds at the 6-minute mark.
> Damian Dunn put Temple up for the first time since the opening basket (25-23), but Penn answered with a three from Lucas Monroe to put the Quakers back on top with four minutes left in the half. It would, however, be Penn's last basket of the half.
> Temple scored the last three points of the first half on a layup by Jahlil White and a free throw from Dunn to head into the locker room with a 28-26 lead.

Second Half
> Penn tied the game coming out of the break on a jumper from Nick Spinoso, but Miller answered with a three to give Temple its largest lead of the game (31-28).
> With the score tied at 35, Penn went on a 7-0 run to take a 42-35, and force a Temple timeout.
> Temple broke Penn's scoring run on a Nick Jourdain dunk, but the Quakers answered with a layup from Max Martz.
> The teams went back and forth until Battle tied the game at 53 on a three point play with just under nine minutes remaining.
> The Cherry and White went cold from the floor, scoring just four points through the end of the game. All four points would come from the line.
> Penn used several runs in a 24-4 finish, closing it out with a 9-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Andrew Laczkowski.

Notes
> White tied his season-high with two steals, while Hicks tied his career-high with two blocks.
> Reynolds was one board away from his second double-double of the season.

Next Up
> Temple will take a break for final exam week before heading to Ole Miss on Dec. 17 to close out a two-game road swing.
