Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Battle to SMU

DALLAS – Despite a season-high 28 points from forward Mia Davis and a season-high nine three-pointers from the team, the Temple women's basketball team (12-14, 7-9 AAC) dropped an overtime battle to the SMU Mustangs (13-12, 7-6 AAC) on Monday night, 65-61. Up by four points midway through the fourth quarter, an SMU comeback tied the game to send the contest into overtime. From there, a few quick buckets from the Mustangs kept SMU in front for the rest of the game.

> Davis: season-high 28 points, seven rebounds
> Aniya Gourdine: nine points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals

First Quarter: Temple 19, SMU 17
> A three-pointer by East followed by another jumper on the baseline gave the Owls their first five points of the night.
> A steal from Aniya Gourdine and three-point baskets from East and Jasha Clinton gave the Owls the lead heading into the second period.
Second Quarter: Temple 25, SMU 29
> The Mustangs' defense clamped down on the Owls in the quarter, only allowing Temple to score six points throughout the 10 minutes.
> An 8-0 run for SMU to begin the quarter gave the Mustangs a six-point lead with just over six minutes to play.
> Davis scored five of Temple's six points in the quarter with Alexa Williamson tacking on a free throw at the end of the period.
> Temple was plagued by turnovers in the first half, recording 14 of them.
Third Quarter: Temple 43, SMU 43
> After a back-and-forth opening few minutes of the half, a scoreless two-minute stretch kept the Mustangs up by five points before a three-pointer from Emani Mayo cut the deficit.
> Davis scored seven of the Owls next 10 points with the other three points coming from a corner three from forward Caranda Perea.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 53, SMU 53
> A defensive battle occurred in the fourth quarter with each team only scoring 10 points apiece.
> A stepback three-pointer from Gourdine got the scoring started for Temple to give the Owls the lead.
> Following a pair of free throws from Davis, another triple from Gourdine put TU in front by four points with just under six minutes to play.
> After SMU tied the game at 53 a few minutes later, a scoreless last three minutes of the contest brought the game into overtime.
Overtime: Temple 61, SMU 65
> Following a layup from SMU's Danielle Sanderlin in the opening seconds of the overtime period, the Owls were never able to take the lead despite a three-pointer from Davis.
