1991 and 2001 Elite Eight Teams to be Honored at Tulsa Game Saturday

2.3.22 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Temple Men's Basketball will honor the anniversaries of two of its five NCAA Elite Eight teams under Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney this Saturday at halftime of the Owls game against Tulsa (2 p.m./ESPN+/1210 AM WPHT).

Last season would have marked the 20th anniversary of the 2000-01 team and the 30th anniversary of the 1990-91 squad, both of which defied the odds with incredible postseason runs that fell just short of the Final Four.  The celebration was postponed to this season since fans were not allowed to attend games in 2020-21 for health and safety concerns.

The 2000-01 Temple team entered the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament with an 18-12 record and then proceeded to defeat Dayton (76-63), George Washington (77-76) and UMass (76-65) to win the A10 Championship.  Entering the NCAA tournament as the 11-seed, the Owls defeated 6-seed Texas (79-65) and 3-seed Florida (75-54) to advance to the Sweet 16. Temple then knocked off 7-seed Penn State (84-72) before falling to #1-seed Michigan State (69-62).

The team, which was led by the Most Outstanding Player in the A10 Tournament, Lynn Greer, finished 24-13 overall.   Besides Greer, members of the 2000-01 team expected to attend the Tulsa game include: David Hawkins, Kevin Lyde, Ronald Rollerson and Quincy Wadley.  Assistant coach Nate Blackwell and athletic trainer Cary Huggard will also be at the game.

The 1990-91 Owls finished their regular season at 20-8 and had to enter the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team after Penn State upset the Cherry and White, 52-50, in the A10 semifinals.  The #10-seed, Temple proceeded to defeat 7-seed Purdue (80-63) and 15-seed Richmond (77-64) to advance to the Sweet 16. The Owls then upset 3-seed Oklahoma State, 72-63 in overtime, before falling to top-seed North Carolina, 75-72, ending their magical run with a 24-10 record.

Mark Macon, current Assistant to the Head Coach at Temple, led the way for the Owls.  Capping off a brilliant career which included All-America honors and the school career scoring record, Macon was named the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA East Regional after scoring 57-points, pulling down 12 rebounds and making five steals against Oklahoma State and UNC.

Joining Macon at Saturday's game will be the Mayor of Camden, Vic Carstarphen, Jan Post and Shoun Randoph as well assistant coaches Blackwell and Dean Demopoulos.

John Chaney Jr. will represent his father, who passed away just over a year ago, Jan 29, 2021.
