Lacrosse Closes Out Homestand Against UC Davis

3.18.22 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple lacrosse team (5-3) will play the final game of its longest home stretch of the season Sunday as the UC Davis Aggies come to town. This will be the first time Temple has faced a west coast opponent since 2016 when the Owls hosted the University of California.

LAST TIME OUT
> Temple suffered its second straight loss Friday to Delaware, 11-10.
> The Owls got off to an early lead, but the Blue Hens scored five of the last six goals, including the last three, to take the win.
> Belle Mastropietro and Quinn Nicolai led Temple with a hat trick each. Mastropietro scooped four ground balls and caused two turnovers. She also led all players with six draw controls. Nicolai passed for two assists in addition to her goals.
> Taylor Grollman saw the first meaningful game action of her young career. The freshman played well, playing a career-high 20 minutes and made three saves on six shots on goal.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> Temple received votes in this week's Inside Lacrosse/IWLCA poll.
> Belle Mastropietro has been playing at a top-tier level, and the powers that be in the lacrosse world have taken notice. The AAC Preseason Midfielder of the Year was named to the Tewaaraton Watchlist last week, recognizing her as being in contention for the "Heisman of lacrosse." Mastropietro is currently ranked 11th nationally in goals (29) and is tied for 14th in points (38). She also leads the American Athletic Conference in draw controls by a wide margin and has been honored by the American five times in the last six weeks with Weekly awards.
> Quinn Nicolai has also been a force in the midfield. The grad transfer ranks 15th in goals (29) and 17th in points (37). She scored a hat trick against Delaware and is tied for the team lead in ground balls (15).
> Mackenzie Roth has staked her claim as one of the best facilitators in the nation. Her 20 assists tie her for third nationally. She is currently tracking have one of the best single seasons in Temple history in terms of assists. Roth is currently six short of entering the top-ten for single-season assists.
> Charessa Crosse re-entered the lineup against Delaware after being out for the first half of the season due to injury. Crosse made a huge impact in the AAC Conference tournament, earning All-Tournament honors.

SCOUTING UC DAVIS
> UC Davis is one of the oldest women's lacrosse programs on the west coast. Only Stanford and Cal are older.
> UC Davis is 3-3 this season. Last season, the Aggies had their best season since 2000, going 12-4 and winning the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).
> Suzanne Isidor is in her fifth season leading UC Davis (35-24). Isidor has extensive head coaching experience. She is in her 19th season as a women's lacrosse head coach, including a ten-year stretch as the bench boss of Penn State. Isidor has not had a losing season since her first as coach of the Aggies.
> UC Davis has a unique situation as a West Coast lacrosse program. The Aggies are members of the MPSF, a "conference" with members that are different in every sport to give schools whose primary conference does not sponsor a given sport a place to play. UC Davis is one of only three women's lacrosse members, with the other two being San Diego State and Fresno State. Being on the west coast also presents some unique scheduling situations. Despite playing in a different conference, the Aggies face off against San Diego State, Cal, Denver, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, and USC every season.

SERIES HISTORY vs. UC DAVIS
> Temple and UC Davis are meeting for the 5th time in series history. The series is tied 2-2.
> The two sides last met in 2016, with the Owls flattening UC Davis 17-4. The schools were scheduled to play in 2020 before the season was canceled due to the pandemic.
