Lacrosse Opens Conference Road Slate Against ECU

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple lacrosse team (9-4, 2-0 AAC) will play its first American Athletic Conference road game this Saturday as the team travels to East Carolina (8-6, 1-1 AAC). The Owls are riding a two-game winning streak after defeating Cincinnati 14-10 last week to claim the program's 500th victory.

LAST TIME OUT
> Temple defeated Cincinnati 14-10 to remain perfect in conference.
> The game was tied at four goals each before Temple took the lead and never looked back. The Bearcats kept it close before Temple pulled away in the fourth quarter.
> Belle Mastropietro paced all scorers with four goals and also picked a game-high four ground balls. The midfielder surpassed 100 goals with her first of the afternoon. Mackenzie Roth scored a hat trick and passed for a game-high three assists.
> The Owls hammered the Bearcats on the ground. Temple won the battle in terms of ground balls 21-9 and also dominated in terms of caused turnovers 11-4.
> Annie Carroll made 11 saves in goal, one short of her career-high.

SCOUTING TEMPLE     
> For the second straight week, the Owls received votes in the IWCLA/Inside Lacrosse Coaches/Media poll.   
> Belle Mastropietro has been a force in all phases of the game. The Tewaaraton Watchlist addition currently ranks top ten in the American in six different statistical categories, including goals, assists, points, and is the conference leader in draw controls per game (5.15). Her 67 controls place her 4th on Temple's all-time single-season list. She has won two straight AAC Midfielder of the Week awards. Her 40 goals lead all midfielders in the American (40).
> Mackenzie Roth is emerging as a contender for AAC Attacker of Year. Roth was named to the AAC Honor Roll this week after leading all players in points against Cincinnati. She now has 29 assists this season, tying her for sixth all-time on Temple's single-season assists list. She is 11th nationally and 2nd in the conference in both total assists and assists per game (2.33).
> Katie Shallow and Maddie Barber are forming the nucleus of an exciting young core for Temple's defense. Shallow ranks second in the American ground balls (30) and first in caused turnovers (25). Barber has picked up 21 ground balls and has caused 14 turnovers, she is also second on the team in draw controls (41). Barber earned a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll for the second straight week.
 
SCOUTING EAST CAROLINA
> Last season, ECU posted a 4-12 record and fell one game short of qualifying for the AAC tournament. The Pirates lost their final game to Cincinnati by one goal, denying them a berth. This season, East Carolina is significantly improved. They are 8-6 and won their first conference matchup against Old Dominion two weeks ago.
> Head Coach Amanda Moore has been at the helm since 2016 when the program was created. Previously, Moore served as the defensive coordinator at Duke University for two seasons. The Pirates are 24-48 during her tenure.
> Megan Tryinski leads the scoring for the Pirates (30), she also leads the team in points with 48. Frances Kimel is the main distributor for East Carolina, with 24 assists. Alexandra Giacolone spearheads the ECU defense, she leads the American in ground balls with 33 and is top five in caused turnovers (20).

SERIES HISTORY vs. EAST CAROLINA
> Temple and ECU have shared a conference since 2019 when the American began sponsoring lacrosse.
> The teams have faced off four times, including twice in Philly last season. The Owls won both matches.
> ECU has never defeated Temple. The Owls hold a 4-0 advantage over East Carolina.
> Despite playing four times, this will be Temple's first trip to ECU. The Owls last visited North Carolina when they played UNC back in 1999.
