Another Season Unbeaten at The TU Pavilion for Temple Men’s Tennis

PHILADELPHIA – Under the 17th year of Head Coach Steve Mauro's guidance, the Temple men's tennis squad had an impressive showing in 2022, posting a 12-10 overall record which included a perfect 9-0 home performance. Their unbeaten home record included three wins at the TU Pavilion, extending their historic win streak on their outdoor court for the ninth straight season. In addition to their win streak, Mauro also secured his 200th win at the helm of the men's tennis program, the only tennis coach in Temple history to reach that milestone.
The Owls returned to campus in August ready for their first fall season since 2019, welcoming back six returners. The Cherry and White competed in five tournaments throughout the fall season, which included a trip to the ITA All-American, ITA Regional and ITA Super Regional tournaments.
Temple had a stellar performance at ITA Regionals, as Thibault Frumholz, Marin Delmas, Leo Raquin and Louis Gorregues represented the Owls and punched their ticket to Super Regionals. Delmas and Gorregues were standouts at Super Regionals, advancing to semifinals before falling to a highly competitive UVA pair in a three-set match that ended in a tie-break.
As the Owls wrapped up their fall season and moved into spring play, they welcomed three newcomers to the squad for the spring semester. Hussein El-Tawil, Jericho Grollman and Henrique Petiz joined the Cherry and White to expand the squad to a nine-man roster.
The Owls opened the season in late January with two tough matches, first facing off against VCU where they dropped to the Rams, 5-2 followed by a loss to Penn, 6-1. Both teams would later be ranked in the Top 50 of the ITA National Rankings.
Temple returned home in early February to host a three-match homestand. The Owls found their first win on Feb. 5 in a 6-1 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn, followed by 5-2 wins over both Siena and No. 56 Monmouth.
A quick trip to Princeton, N.J. on Mar. 5 ended in a 5-2 defeat against No. 34 Princeton, however the Owls slid back into the win column the following week, posting a 5-2 win over FDU at home. This win served as Mauro's 200th win at the helm of the program.
The Owls momentum continued as they hit the road to take on a highly competitive Navy team, edging the Midshipmen, 4-3 to advance to 5-3 on the season. The Cherry and White returned to action the following day, traveling to William & Mary, but dropped to the Tribe, 6-1.
Temple returned home to host Delaware at the Cherry Hill Racquet Club, earning the 4-3 win before beginning their road trip to Virginia where they would first take on Hampton. Temple swept the Pirates, 7-0, followed by a 4-1 loss to No. 60 Old Dominion. The Cherry and White closed out their weekend on the road with another sweep, dominating Norfolk State, 7-0 on Sunday.
Just three days later, the Owls posted their third sweep of the season in a 4-0 showing over Morgan State before heading to Texas to take on three highly competitive American Athletic Conference opponents. The Cherry and White played high-level tennis, but ultimately dropped to No. 31 SMU, No. 37 Memphis and Wichita State.
After a long weekend of travel, the Owls returned to North Broad to close out home competition for the 2022 season with three matchups on the books. The Owls swept Drexel 7-0 on senior day, followed by a 4-0 win over George Mason and a 4-2 showing over St. John's. With these wins, the Owls secured their ninth straight season unbeaten at the TU Pavilion.
With the American Athletic Conference right around the corner, Temple traveled to No. 49 Tulsa for their last regular season matchup. The Owls challenged the Golden Hurricane until the end, but ultimately were edged, 4-2. Temple remained in Oklahoma for the week, practicing for the AAC Championship, hosted by Tulsa that was set for Apr. 22.
The Owls received the eighth seed and were slotted to matchup against first-seeded and nationally ranked SMU. The Owls had one of their most impressive showings of the year, challenging the Mustangs until the very end, but ultimately dropped, 4-2 to close out the season with a 12-10 record.
Delmas proved to be a force to be reckoned with, posting the best singles record on team. With an 18-7 overall singles performance, he posted an impressive 13-5 dual mark which included a 12-5 record No. 1 spot, followed by a 1-0 showing from the No. 2 position.
Three players trailed Delmas in singles play, in Gregoire Barety, Raquin and Frumholz. Each posted 10 dual singles win to tie for the second-best singles record on the team. Raquin and Frumholz each posted a 10-6 record while Barety sat at 10-8.
The success of Delmas and Gorregues as a pair did not stop in the fall. The duo posted the best dual record on the team with a 9-5 showing, including a 4-4 mark from the No. 1 spot and a 5-1 performance from the No. 2 spot.
