Temple Football Names Six Single-Digits

8.15.22 | Football

PHILADELPHIA – Temple Football continues with one of the best traditions in college football by announcing six players to its single-digit group.

Introduced to Temple in 2009 under then-head coach Al Golden, the tradition of awarding single-digit uniform numbers to the team's toughest players on and off the field has become a prideful honor for the program. In fact, a number of schools across the country have also incorporated it.

Joining the list this year are: OL Adam Klein, LB Jordan Magee, CB Jalen McMurray, OL Isaac Moore, WR Adonicas Sanders, and DL Darian Varner. These players were informed of their selection by Temple head coach Stan Drayton in a team meeting this evening. Many former Temple Football single-digit players were invited to attend and were able to do so via Zoom.

Klein and Moore have been mentioned together since their true freshman year in 2018 when they each had a chance to start at tackle. Both are fifth year graduate students. Klein has played in 40 games with 35 starts at right tackle and both guard positions. He was a team captain in 2021. Moore has not missed a game, playing all 45 in the past four seasons, including 32 starts at left tackle.

Magee is a redshirt sophomore on the field and a senior in the classroom who emerged as a starting middle linebacker a year ago. The two-time letter winner has played in 21 games at Temple and has collected 69 tackles.

Varner is a sophomore who led the Owls in sacks last year despite not breaking into the starting lineup. This offseason under a new strength and conditioning staff, Varner reshaped his body losing over 20 pounds, and has been a relentless competitor throughout practices.

Despite being a redshirt freshman, McMurray is setting an example in the cornerback room. He played just four games a year ago but earned a start in the spring game and seems to make at least one interception each practice.

Sanders has quickly impressed his teammates and coaches since joining the team following spring ball. The redshirt senior transferred to Temple form Georgia Tech and has become a leader among the wide receivers.

Sanders will wear #5, Magee #6, McMurray #7, and Varner #9. Technically, Klein (awarded #2) and Moore (awarded #4) will remain in their familiar number 74 and 63, respectively, as the NCAA prohibits offensive linemen from wearing numbers other then 50-79. It's possible that additional players may be added at a later date.
