Owls' Volleyball Earn a Split on Final Day of the Cornell Tournament

9.11.22 | Women's Volleyball

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Temple volleyball team (4-4) split a pair of matches on Saturday during the Cornell Tournament, falling to Colgate in four sets earlier in the day, but coming away with a hard fought five-set victory versus Cornell in the nightcap and improve to 3-0 in five-set matches this season.

Colgate 3, Temple 1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19)
  • In the first set, after coming out of timeout with the score favoring Colgate, 20-19, Temple middle blocker Chudear Tut tied the score as she connected with one of her seven kills in the match. The Raiders retook the advantage, briefly, at 21-20, but Temple scooped up the set win by winning five of the last eight points for the 26-24 win.
  • Colgate held a two-point lead in set two, 14-12, but Sophie Thompson's serve kept the Owls off balance pushing her team's lead to 18-12.The Owls fought back, tying the score at 23 with the help of six errors from the Raiders, and two Samantha Jo Mikosky blocks. Colgate was able to fend off the late Temple surge to win 25-23.
  • Redshirt senior Peyton Boyd kept the Owls and Raiders tight in the third set, resulting in a 20-20 score. Boyd was sharp, adding five kills and a perfect hitting percentage, but Colgate won the set, winning five of the last eight points, limiting the Cherry and White to one kill in that span.
  • The Raiders used a 9-1 run to start the fourth set, but that's all they needed to keep Temple from making a serious threat to extend the match. Colgate finished the Owls, 24-19, with a hitting percentage of .286 compared to TU's .167.
  • As a team the Owls stuffed the Raiders 15 times in the loss, including freshman Samantha Mikosky tying the third-most blocks in a match in school history. The Bethlehem, Pa. native recorded three solo and eight block assists.
  • The Owls dropped to 1-2 in four-set matches this season.
  • Owls' outside hitter Taylor Davenport led all players in the match with 20 kills.
  • Sophomore Patrycja Zielinska tallied her second career double-double, finishing with 46 assists and 11 digs.
  • Temple and Colgate traded the lead 10 times throughout the four sets, along with 32 tie scores.

Temple 3, Cornell 2 (25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13)
  • The Cherry and White rolled to a 25-18 set one victory as sophomore Taylor Davenport collected six of her match-16 kills. Temple hit .400 in the opening set compared to Big Red's .276.
  • After a service ace from Cornell's Eliza Konvicka gave Cornell an 18-15 advantage in set two, the Owls clawed back to tie the score at 22. TU was unable to sustain the momentum, allowing the Big Red to pick up the 25-22 set two victory.
  • In set three, with Temple down by the score of 8-1, the team went on a 11-3 run to take the lead from the Big Red. Freshman Samantha Jo Mikosky was vital in the Owls' run as they scored six straight points off her serve, including a pair of service aces. Neither team could pull away from the other by more than a couple of points in latter stages of the set. Temple came out of a timeout, down by the score of 18-16, but pulled away from the Big Red, winning nine of the last 12 points and winning the set, 25-21. Junior transfer Jelena Prolic added three of her five kills in the set during that stretch run.
  • Redshirt senior Peyton Boyd and Davenport led the Owls in set four, compiling four kills each. Boyd had a team-high .375 hitting percentage on eight swings for the set. Temple found itself down by six points on multiple occasions of the set before Boyd put three balls away, cutting the Cornell lead to 19-18. The Cherry and White fought back to tie the set it at 22 apiece, but their momentum stalled, falling to Cornell, 25-22.
  • Boyd was big in the fourth for TU, picking up four kills of the 15 points. Just like most of the match, neither side allowed the other side to have much breathing room. The fifth set featured 11 tie scores and four lead changes, and with the score tied at 11-11, the Owls made their move, outscoring the Big Red 4-2 to close out the match and improve to 3-0 in five-set matches this season.
  • Boyd tallied 15 kills, while Prolic added her second career double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.
  • Owls' setter Patrycja Zielinska dished 52 assists in the win, her second-ever 50-plus assist match.
  • Temple's sophomore libero Falanika Danielson dug a a match-high and season-high 23 balls in the victory.

On Prolic - "She can be a vocal leader and she's a leader by example." commented Hampton-Keith. "A lot of our team looks to her for that leadership and that will to win."

On Mikosky – "From the service line she gives the team fits. She had a great run and helped our team to the win." said Hampton-Keith referring to the freshman's the third set service rally, garnering the Owls six straight points.
