Davenport leads Owls to Victory Over Providence with 23 Kills

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team improved to 5-4 overall on Friday afternoon with their fourth five-set victory of the season by defeating the Providence College Friars, 24-26, 25-17, 14-25, 25-22, 15-11 on the first day of the Sheraton University City Classic at the Palestra. Sophomore Taylor Davenport led the Owls offensively with a match-high 23 kills, while Jaaliyah Evans added a season-high 11 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Magdalena Rogalska got her first start of the season and added a match-high 36 assists and three service aces.
- The Owls last three wins this season have become of the five-set variety.
First Set (26-24, Providence)
- The first set was a nail-biter as it saw 15 ties and six lead changes.
- Providence's Shaliyah Rhoden led with five kills and Emma Nelson led all players with 14 digs.
- Rogalska dished out a set-high 11 assists, while Davenport connected on seven of her 20 total kills.
- Providence led the team-hitting percentage battle with a .244 percentage, while holding the Owls to .196.
- Neither team had held more than a two-point lead in the opening set.
Second Set (25-17, Temple)
- The Cherry and White led throughout the second set, never allowing the Friars to get in any offensive rhythm.
- Davenport led Temple with five kills, in addition to Evans and Chudear Tut adding three.
- Temple hit .268 in the second set, while holding the Friars to .147.
- The Owls largest lead of set two was 10 points.
Third Set (25-14, Providence)
- Providence hit .722 in the third set, while going on a 21-7 run.
- Every player that had a kill on the Friars' team in the third set hit at least .429. Rhoden tallied five kills on a .833 hitting percentage.
- PC blocked four balls compared to the Owls' zero.
Four Set (25-22, Temple)
- In the fourth set with Temple down by five points rallied back from a five-point deficit to force a fifth set.
- The fourth set featured seven tie scores and three changes.
- Davenport had three kills on Owls' final four points.
Fifth Set (15-11, Temple)
- The fifth set featured six tie scores and two changes.
- Temple found itself down by the score of 7-4, but three consecutive points to tie the score, 7-7. Both teams traded points before the Owls went on 6-3 to pull off the match victory.
- Davenport had a set-high four kills, while sophomore transfer Chudear Tut hit perfect on three kills.
