Owls in the NFL - Week 1
9.13.22 | Football
As Temple's football season is well underway heading into homecoming and week 3 of the season, let's look back at an eventful week 1 in the NFL for former Owls' players. Of the 22 former Owls on NFL rosters, 15 suited up to play this past weekend to kick off the season.
The action started on Thursday night in the first game of the season, when Buffalo left tackle Dion Dawkins (2013-16) propelled Josh Allen and the Bills offense to a 31-10 win over the reigning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Dawkins was on the field for every offensive snap as the offense had over 30 minutes of possession and gained over 400 yards. Linebacker Tyler Matakeich (2012-15) suited up for his third season with the Bills, but did not record any defensive statistics in their win.
Tight end Chris Myarick (2015-2019) and the New York Giants went into Tennessee and upset the Titans 21-20. In a late fourth quarter drive, Myarick caught the game-winning touchdown pass and the Giants were able to convert the two-point conversion to win the game. A truly spectacular start to the season for this Owl in the NFL.
Defensive end Michael Dogbe (2014-18) and the Arizona Cardinals were unable to walk away with a win in their home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, 44-21. Dogbe was still able to record five total tackles on Sunday.
Center Matt Hennessy (2016-19) and the Atlanta Falcons unfortunately lost a close one to division rivals, the New Orleans Saints, 27-26. Hennessy enters his third season with the Atlanta Falcons this year. Rookie defensive end Arnold Ebiketie recorded his first career sack.
The Carolina Panthers and former Temple head coach Matt Rhule (2013-16) started two former Owls for opening day, in defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis (2012-15) who is entering his first season with Carolina, and wide receiver Robbie Anderson (2011-13, 15). Anderson had a breakout opening game with five receptions for 102 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield in the fourth quarter. This touchdown by Anderson gave Carolina the lead late in the fourth, but it wasn't enough as the Cleveland Browns kicked a 58-yard game-winning field goal for a final score of 26-24. Ioannidis collected 4 tackles on the day in his debut for Carolina. Other Panthers include safeties Sam Franklin (2016-19) and Sean Chandler (2014-17), who played snaps on defense and special teams, and quarterback Phillip Walker (2013-16), who dressed as the backup for Mayfield.
Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (2018) got the opening week start in his debut for the Las Vegas Raiders and had six tackles in a 24-19 loss to division rivals, the Los Angeles Chargers.
Defensive end Jacob Martin (2014-17) made his debut for the New York Jets this Sunday, where he recorded three tackles and assisted on a sack. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the Jets lost 24-9.
Philadelphia and linebackers Haason Reddick (2013-16) and Shaun Bradley (2016-19) helped lead the Eagles to an important win in week 1 on the road over the Detroit Lions, 38-35. Reddick made his Philadelphia debut this Sunday, where he recorded two tackles, one of them being a tackle for loss. Bradley picked up where he left off last season, as he showed his excellency on special teams.
On Monday night, Denver kicker Brandon McManus (2009-12) scored 10 points (3 FGs and one PAT) in the Broncos 17-16 loss to Seattle.
