PHILADELPHIA – Temple University mourns the passing of former Owls' football player Jarred Alwan. Alwan was 29 years old.
Alwan played for Temple from 2013-16. He made his debut, starting as a true freshman at middle linebacker at Notre Dame on August 31, 2013. He was the starting middle linebacker in 2015-16, two seasons that resulted in an American Athletic Conference Championship Game appearance by Temple. When the Owls won the 2016 AAC Championship Game, it was Alwan who led the team with a career-best 13 tackles.
Alwan, who earned his undergraduate degree in adult and organizational development in 2017, then followed head coach Matt Rhule to Baylor, becoming a graduate coaching assistant for the Bears.
The Cherry Hill, N.J., native attended Camden Catholic High.
"We are all devastated and caught off guard by my son, Jarred's loss," said his mother Narci Alwan. "We want to give Jarred the memorial he deserves., to honor his memory and say our last goodbyes."
The Alwan family has set up a GoFundMe page to receive donations for the funeral expenses. "On behalf of the Alwan family with deep regretful grief, we thank you in advance."
The family has also decided to donate Jarred's brain to the study of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (C.T.E.).
