Women’s Basketball to Face Wichita State on National Girls and Women in Sports Day

PHILADELPHIA – Fresh off two straight victories, the Temple women's basketball team will take the floor Wednesday as the Wichita State Shockers visit Liacouras Center (7 p.m./ESPN+/Varsity Network App).
 
The game coincides with National Girls & Women in Sport Day. Temple will be celebrating NGWSD with mini-clinics taught by Temple student-athletes from several sports. Families with children 8th grade and under can sign-up here.

PROMOTIONS/THEMES
> National Girls and Women in Sports Day: Two complimentary tickets to the game for those register and attend our pre-game event.
> Recognition of Tina Sloan Green at halftime: Former Temple Lacrosse and Field Hockey coach Tina Sloane Green will be recognized at halftime. Slone Green won three national titles at Temple in lacrosse.
> Employee Appreciation: Temple Employees will receive a discount to group pricing on tickets.

LAST TIME OUT: UCF 56 @ Temple 63
> Temple defeated UCF, 63-56 for its second straight win. The Owls now sit at .500 in conference play.
> The contest was close from wire to wire, with the two sides tied at the conclusion of the second quarter (28-28) and the third quarter (43-43).
> Temple's defense stiffened in the fourth quarter, not allowing a point from the field for nearly seven straight minutes. Aleah Nelson scored 14 points in the final frame.
> Nelson scored a game-high 28 points, the second most of any Owl this season. Tarriyonna Gary found the basket for 16 and grabbed five rebounds.

THE OWLS
> Nelson has paced the Owls in scoring all season (15.7 ppg/6th AAC) and assists (4.0 apg/3rd AAC). She has scored in double-figures in seven of the last eight games. Her 28 points against UCF are behind only her own season-high of 33 against Duquesne in late December.
> East is second on the roster in scoring (11.3 ppg). She is the team leader in boards (6.2 rpg) and has recorded three double doubles this season. East has started the last two games for the Owls after not starting since November.
> Shooting guard Tarriyonna Gary is playing her best basketball of the season. She is averaging 15.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg over her last four, both above her season averages of 9.7 and 3.6, respectively.

SCOUTING WICHITA STATE
> Wichita State has just one winning record in conference play since joining the AAC for the 2017-18 season. Last season, the Shockers went 14-16, with a 5-11 mark in conference.
> The squad is 13-8 this season and 3-5 in conference. Two of the wins came over the Cincinnati Bearcats.
> DJ McCarty leads the Shockers in scoring with 12.3 points per game and 3.4 assists per game. Jane Asinde is averaging a double-double with 11.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest.
> Keitha Adams is in her sixth season leading the Shockers after spending 16 years at the helm of UTEP. She is 359-295 in 22 seasons as a head coach and 75-86 in her six years in Wichita.

 SERIES HISTORY
> Temple and WSU have played each other every season since Wichita State joined the AAC in 2017. The Owls are 7-3 all time against the Shockers. The two sides met once prior to sharing a conference in 1983.
> Temple won three straight after Wichita State won the first conference meeting between the two in 2018.
> The Shockers won back-to-back meetings between the two in 2020, Temple has won the last three.
