Franke, Sloan Green to Be Honored By The Institute for Sport and Social Justice

ORLANDO, Fla. - Legendary Hall of Fame coaches Dr. Nikki Franke and Tina Sloan Green will be honored as sports game changers by The Institute for Sport and Social Justice at its annual Power of Sport Gala (formerly the Giant Steps and Hall of Fame Awards) on Oct. 21.
Started in 1999, this capstone event is a decades-long tradition that honors individuals who use their power and influence in sports to break barriers and draw awareness to social justice causes. Franke and Sloan Green will be honored as founders of The Black Women in Sport Foundation, along with fellow co-founders former Temple law professor Linda Greene and former Temple Women's Athletic Director Dr. Alpha Alexander.Â
Dr. Nikki Franke, who founded the women's fencing program in 1972, is the all-time winningest women's athletics coach at Temple. Franke amassed 898 wins, including the 1992 NCAA Championship, during her Hall of Fame career. Perennially ranked in the Top 10 in the nation, the iconic coach has guided the program to an active streak of 26 straight National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Championships.Â
Sloan Green guided the Temple women's lacrosse team to three National Championships during her 18-season run, compiling an outstanding 207-62-4 record with a .758 career winning percentage. Â In 1988 she led the Owls to a perfect 19-0 record and a national championship. Her teams won 29 straight games between the 1983-84 and '84-'85 seasons.
