Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Heartbreaker to ECU

PHILADELPHIA – Temple volleyball dropped a heart-breaking five-set loss to the East Carolina Pirates on the Friday night in McGonigle Hall by the score 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 8-15. The Owls fall to 4-1 in five-set matches in 2023.

In the loss, the Owls fall 12-6 overall and 3-4 in the American Athletic Conference, while ECU improves 15-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED

At the service line, both teams combined for 33 service errors in the match, but the Pirates out served the Owls with nine service aces to six.
The Pirates had 14 team blocks on the night as Julianna Askew (8) and Francesca McBride (7) led their team with a combined for 15 blocks.
ECU led the match with a.221 hitting percentage, led by McBride's 12 kills. On the other side, Temple hit .148, led by graduate transfer Olivia Vance's 14 kills.

Set 1 (TU 25, ECU 21)

The Owls got off to a hot start as they hit .355 with 13 kills on 31 total attacks.
Temple jumped out to a 11-6 advantage and never looked back as they got three kills from senior Taylor Davenport over the first 11 points. Davenport started the match with five of her 13 kills on the night. Davenport hit .333 with one error on 12 total attacks.
Vance got off to a quick start with three kills in the first set on six total attacks. The Saline, Mich. native had five chances with just one hitting error.

Set 2 (TU 25, ECU 22)

With graduate transfer Avery Luoma at serve, the Owls continued their hot play to begin the second set. The Cherry and White jumped out to a 11-8, but fell behind by a point, but Luoma served a pair of aces to turn the momentum back to her team's favor.
The Owls turned the tables late in the second set to as they got a pair of kills from Davenport and Vance.
Vance led all players in the set as she hit .500 in the set with five kills on eight total attacks.
There were eight ties and four lead changes in the second set.

Set 3 (TU 22, ECU 25)

East Carolina found something that worked in the third set as they hit .273.
Individually, ECU's Farah Farooq led all players as she hit .600 with four kills.
With the Owls leading the set 11-9, the visitors ran off five straight points to take a lead 14-11, getting a pair of kills from Farooq in that run.
The Pirates went up by four points, 19-15, but Temple cut it down to one point with a pair of kills from Davenport, and an ace from Luoma.
East Carolina would win the set by going on a 4-1 run.

Set 4 (TU 22, ECU 25)

Temple held a 14-11 lead in the fourth set, but yet again ECU went on a 5-0 run, taking a 16-14 lead as they got a pair of kills from Andres Aldrete and one each from Farooq and McBride.
The Cherry and White could never regain the lead down the stretch, but did cut the lead to one point, 21-20.
The Owls were led by their season-leading hitter Davenport down the stretch, but the Columbia, S.C. native was forced into a three errors over the final four points of the set.
Aldrete led all hitters in the set with five kills on nine total attacks for a .556 hitting percentage.
Luoma led a quartet of Temple players with four kills, while Vance, Davenport, and Chelci Banks had three apiece.

Set 5 (TU 15, ECU 8)

With the fifth set tied at 3-3, East Carolina won five straight points (8-3) getting a pair of kills from McBride and Brittany Wood.
ECU held the Owls to a .000 hitting in the fifth set, while they put together a .304 hitting percentage.
