Luoma’s 17-Kill, 16-Dig Double-Double Leads Volleyball to Win Over Charlotte in Five

Temple improves to 15-7 overall and 5-1 in five-set matches this season
CHARLOTTE – On Saturday, the Temple volleyball team knocked off the Charlotte 49ers for the second straight day and improved to 5-1 in five-set matches this season by winning, 28-26, 25-27, 12-25, 27-25, 15-11. Just like Friday, graduate transfer Avery Luoma earned a double-double and her sixth of the season with a season-high 17 kills and 16 digs to along with four blocks.
The Owls improved to 15-7 overall and 5-5 in American Athletic Conference play in the win, while the 49ers dropped to 9-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

The Owls improved to 15-7 overall and 5-5 in American Athletic Conference play in the win, while the 49ers dropped to 9-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Including Luoma's 17, a trio of Owls recorded double-digit kills on the day including senior Taylor Davenport with 14 and fellow graduate transfer Olivia Vance with 11. Davenport is now two kills (998) shy of 1,000 for her illustrious career.
- Freshman setter Lexi Yoza also added her second double-double in as many days with a team-high 28 assists and a career-high 20 digs.
- Notably, the Owls' Jelena Prolic and Yoza combined for 41 digs, marking the first time this season and the first time since Nov. 10, 2019 (Peyton Boyd -22, Averi Salvador - 20) that a two or more Temple players would reach 20 digs in a match.
- Defensive specialist Falanika Danielson led the Owls with three aces, while the team combined for seven total. Middle Blocker Chelci Banks led the team with eight blocks.
- The five-set match featured 27 ties and 14 lead changes.
- The 49ers also had three players with double-digit kill matches, led by 19 from Jessica Ricks.
SET 1 (TU 26, CHA 28)
- Down 11-7, the Owls took a 13-12 advantage with a 6-0 run that featured two kills each from Luoma and Davenport. Luoma was also an important part defensively during that run as she and Banks combined for back-to-back block assists.
- The two teams remained close throughout the latter half of the set, with the Owls forcing Charlotte timeout on set point, 25-24. The 49ers came out of the break, scoring three of the final four points to seal the victory.
- For Temple, Samantha Jo Mikosky, Banks, and Luoma had three kills apiece in set one. Mikosky led all hitters with a set-best .750 hitting percentage.
SET 2 (TU 27, CHA 25)
- The 49ers came out to start set two with a 4-1 lead as they got back-to-back solo blocks from Sydney Baham.
- The Owls went on a 11-3 run that put them ahead, 12-7, getting two kills apiece from Luoma and Vance. Also, during that span, Chelci Banks had one of her eight kills on the night along with one of three Danielson's service aces.
- Coming out of the media timeout, ahead 15-11, the Owls sealed the set victory as Luoma tallied six of her seven kills in the set.
- Luoma led the Cherry and White to victory in the set as she hit .875 on eight total attacks with no errors.
SET 3 (TU 12, CHA 25)
- Charlotte led from wire-to-wire and hit .324 in the set, while holding the Owls to a -.075 hitting percentage.
- The 49ers' Lara Kretschmer led the set with six of her 17 kills in the match.
SET 4 (TU 27, CHA 25)
- Charlotte forced the Owls to call timeout as it controlled the set with its largest lead of 19-13, but Temple started clawing away at the advantage by closing the gap to one, 20-19. During the run the Cherry and White got kills from Luoma (2) and Davenport (2).
- The Owls staved off match point at 24-22 as they got kills from their veteran leaders, Luoma (1) and Vance (1) to set the score 24-24.
- The next point went to Charlotte, but it was the Owls who forced a fifth set as Banks and Davenport added to their kill tallies.
SET 5 (TU 15, CHA 11)
- TU rolled its momentum into the final set, taking an 8-6 into the media timeout.
- The Owl sealed their second straight win over the 49ers in as many days by winning five of the last six points, getting a pair of putaways from Davenport and a service ace from Yoza.
