Volleyball Improves to 12-5 with 5-Set Victory at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Behind senior's Taylor Davenport's match-high 23 kills and six blocks, the Temple Owls volleyball team improved to 12-5 overall on the season and 3-3 in American Athletic Conference play with a 25-23, 18-25, 28-30, 26-24, 15-6 victory over the Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) on Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Convocation Center.
In the loss, the Roadrunners fall to 8-10 overall and 1-6 in the AAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The five-set match featured 36 ties and 17 lead changes.
- Temple had three hitters with double-digit kills, including a match-high 23 from Davenport. Graduate transfer Olivia Vance added a season-high 17, while fellow graduate transfer Avery Luoma added her third double-double of the season with 15 kills and 12 digs.
- Including Luoma, three Owls added double-doubles on Sunday. Freshmen setters Lexi Yoza and Ava Blascziek combined for 52 assists and 26 digs. Yoza added her second double-double of the season with a team-high and career-high 29 assists and 12 digs and fellow setter Blascziek also added her second double-double of the season with 22 assists and 14 digs.
- Owls' middle blocker Chelci Banks broke a career-high with eight blocks in the victory.
Set 1 (TU 25, UTSA 23)
- The Owls went up 11-6, forcing UTSA into its first timeout after going on a 4-0 run. Samantha Jo Mikosky started the rally with a kill, while Chelci Banks and Olivia Hummel added a block assist, and a service ace from Ava Blaszciek.
- The Owls scored one more point, but the Roadrunners went on a 6-0 coming out of its own timeout, getting a pair of service aces from Katelyn Krieink to tie the set at 12-12.
- Temple found itself down by three points (19-16) but clawed its way back to win 25-23. Chelci Banks Owls' surge with two blocks and a kill over the final five points.
Set 2 (TU 18, UTSA 25)
- UTSA jumped out to a 3-0 as it got kills from Mia Sorenson and Carolina Krueger, but Temple turned the tables on the Roadrunners by running off four straight points. With Olivia Vance at the service line, the graduate student got run started with a service ace and then added kills by Davenport and Banks gave the Owls a 4-3 lead.
- After the media timeout where the Roadrunners found themselves ahead 15-13, the Owls came right back to score back-to-back points to tie the set, 15-15, but that's all Temple could do to stay within range of the Roadrunners' lead.
- With the help of a service ace from Ellie Turner and kills from Cansu Gunaydin (2), Mekaila Aupiu, Krienk, Krueger and Soerenson, UTSA went on a 9-3 run to end the set, winning 25-18, and tying the match 1-1.
Set 3 (TU 28, UTSA 30)
- The Owls found themselves down again to begin set three. UTSA scored three straight points to mark the score at 7-4, getting a pair of kills from Krienke and one from Krueger.
- Coming from four points behind (13-9), Temple took the lead, 14-13, getting a pair of kills from graduate transfer Avery Luoma in the run.
- Temple went on a 7-0 (21-14) scoring run as Luoma continued her hot play leading the Owls during that span with a kill and a service ace.
- UTSA took the lead, 23-22, with four services from Krueger, including a string of three straight points.
- The two teams traded points down the stretch with Temple earning four set points, but UTSA fended of the Owls, winning 30-28. In that final span, Krienke tied the score and then gave the Roadrunners a 29-28 advantage, but Krueger finished of the Owls with her 10th kill of the match.
Set 4 (TU 26, UTSA 24)
- Down 4-2, Temple rattled off five straights points to jump ahead 7-4 as it got kills from freshman Olivia Hummel and Luoma.
- The Cherry and White continued to hold the lead until UTSA tied the score at 19-19.
- Down by three points, Temple found a way to win, scoring the final six points of the set with three points scored on kill from its grad transfer tandem; Vance (2) and Luoma.
- Vance led Temple in the set with seven kills on 12 total attacks with just one hitting error.
Set 5 (TU 15, UTSA 6)
- With the scored tied 3-3, Yoza at the service line, the Owls scored six straight points to pull away from the Roadrunners.
- Graduate student Jelena Prolic's serve finished off UTSA for the victory as Temple scored on the final four points of the fifth set.
- The Owls held UTSA to a -.333 hitting percentage on zero kills during the final set.
