Davenport’s 21 Kills Leads Volleyball in Five-Set Comeback Win Over UAB

PHILADELPHIA – Behind 21 kills from senior outside hitter, Taylor Davenport, the Temple volleyball team picked up its 16th win of the season on Friday night at home as it defeated the University of Alabama-Birmingham in five sets, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 13-15.
With the win Temple moves to 16-11 overall and 6-9 in American Athletic Conference play and 6-3 in five-set matches while UAB falls to 4-24 overall and 2-14 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams combined for 27 service aces on the night, but it was Temple who had the advantage with 15.
- Temple senior Jelena Prolic and USF's Chloe Rodriguez tied for the match-high with four service aces.
- Along with Davenport's match-high kills, graduate transfer Olivia Vance tied her career-high with 19, leaving her seven shy of her of 1,000 for her career.
- Davenport led all hitters in the match in kills in each of the five sets.
- Three Owls; including senior Falanika Danielson (15), Jelena Prolic (12), and Avery Luoma (11) had double-digit digs on the night.
- Brooklyn Allison and Anna Burkhardt led the match with 16 digs apiece for the Blazers.
- Temple freshmen setters Lexi Yoza and Ava Blascziek combined for 53 assists in the win. Yoza led the Owls with 28 and Blascziek added 25.
- UAB's Kelsey Smith led the match with 32 assists.
SET 1 (TEM 23, UAB 25)
- With the Cherry and White leading 10-6, the Blazers went on a 8-2 run that gave them a 18-16 advantage. During that run, Jorda Crook added a pair of kills and Chloe Rodriguez added two service aces.
- The Owls would tie the score at 20-20, but UAB would not relinquish the lead down the stretch.
- UAB hit .378 as a team led by Mia Reese's set-high five kills
- Davenport matched Reese with five kills as she hit .400 on 10 total attacks.
SET 2 (TEM 25, UAB 20)
- With the score tied a 9-9, Temple pulled away, scoring four straight points to take a 13-9 lead.
- The Owls would keep the advantage throughout the final half of set two, tying the match, 1-1.
- Davenport continued her hot hand with a set-high six kills while hitting .455.
SET 3 (TEM 25, UAB 15)
- With just one tie score in the third set, Temple led throughout, getting three kills off the bench from Jaaliyah Evans.
- For the third straight set, Davenport led all hitters with five kills. The Columbia, S.C. native hit .375 on eight attempts.
- Vance led all hitters with .667 hitting percentage with her four kills.
SET 4 (TEM 23, UAB 25)
- Prolic got it started as she connected with a back-to-back aces for a 3-0 Temple lead. TU continued to pour it on. Up 9-3, the Owls ran off three straight points, forcing UAB into a timeout.
- After their initial timeout, the Blazers chipped away at the Owls' lead, eventually tying the score 12-12. During that stretch, Asli Celikkol connected with a pair of aces, her only two of the night.
- Both teams traded points throughout the back half of the set.
- Down 22-20, UAB scored five of the last six points to end the set.
- While the Blazers hit .367 in the set, they also held the Owls to a .171 hitting percentage in the set victoy.
SET 5 (TEM 15, UAB 13)
- UAB took its momentum into final set, jumping out on Temple by the score of 7-1. Setter Kelsey Smith helped her cause, adding a pair of service aces during the run.
- Temple clawed from six down to three down. Nalani McBride entered set five as she helped her team earn three consecutive points, tying the final set, 9-9.
- Davenport connected with a kill, tying the set 11-11, giving the Owls all the momentum they need to win set five.
- With the score 11-11, Falanika Danielson's back-to-back aces sealed the win for Temple.
