Owls' Volleyball Falters to USF

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Owls (15-10, 5-8 AAC) volleyball team played their third five-set match in four times out but fell on Thursday afternoon to the South Florida Bulls (14-10, 8-5 AAC) in McGonigle Hall, 25-20, 27-29, 18-25, 21-25, 5-15. The Bulls Maria Clara Andrade led all players with a double-double, 24 kills and 11 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Temple got off to a hot start, taking the first set 25-20, behind a .429 team hitting percentage. Between upperclassmen Olivia Vance and Taylor Davenport, the two combined for eight kills, with four apiece kills and .467 hitting percentages.
- Over the next two sets, the Bulls defeated the Owls behind Andrade's 10 kills.
- Davenport helped the Cherry and White to the 25-21 set four victory with three kills apiece, with play hitting over .400.
- USF won set five, 15-5, by going on a 7-0 run to end the match.
- Temple middle blocker had a great match offensively with nine kills on 13 total attacks, with just one error on a .615 hitting percentage.
- Along with Andrade's double-double, Buse Hazan earned one on the day with 14 kills and 15 digs, Marta Cvitovic added 17 kills.
SET 1 (TU 25, USF 20)
- With Temple leading 4-3, it extended its lead to six points (13-7) with a pair of kills each from Banks and Vance.
- The Owls never allowed to the Bulls get within four points of their lead throughout the final stages of set one.
- The Owls held USF to a .147 in the first set, forcing seven hitting errors.
SET 2 (TU 27, USF 29)
- Temple continued its hot play in to set two, going up 6-2, and forcing an early timeout by South Florida. The Cherry and White got a pair of kills by graduate transfer Avery Luoma, one from Banks, and a service ace from Vance.
- With the Owls up 10-5, the Bulls forced TU in to three straight attack errors that got them right back into the set, but still down 10-8.
- Capped off by a service ace Jelena Prolic and a kill from Vance, the Owls forced USF to use its second time of the set at 16-11. The Cherry and White swung the momentum back their side, winning six of nine points.
- The Bulls cut the deficit to two points once again at 18-16 by going on a 5-2 run with the help of a pair of service aces by Cvitovic and Hazan.
- USF finally tied the set at 23-23 with a 5-0 run, getting a pair of kills by Hazan, one from Andrade, one from Cvitovic.
- Both sides battled back and forth late in the set and both sides were broken from one another before going extras.
- With the scored tied 27-27, USF forged the victory with back-to-back points for the win.
SET 3 (TU 18, USF 25)
- USF held the lead throughout the set, holding Temple to a .000 hitting percentage.
- Niki Khoshatefeh and Andrade led Bulls in set three with four kills apiece. Khoshatefeh led all players in the set with a .800 hitting percentage, while Andrade hit .667.
SET 4 (TU 25, USF 21)
- The Owls tied the match in the fourth set, recording four team blocks. Banks led the Owls with two solo blocks.
- Just like set two, Temple got out to a lead (5-2) before South Florida went on a 13-7 run to take 15-12 lead. In that span, the Bulls won four of five points, while getting kills from Khoshatefeh and two from Andrade.
- The Bulls would go on to tie the set in the fourth set (21-21), but the Cherry and White won the final four points by getting two of Vance's season-high four service aces.
SET 5 (TU 5, USF 15)
- USF rolled through set five, hitting .667, as Andrade and Cvitkovic tied for a set-high five kills.
- The Bulls' Caroline Dykes had 10 assists of her team's 15 points in the set victory.

BEFORE THE ACTION
- Prior to the match, Temple Hall of Famer and Temple volleyball's all-time leader in kills, Mary Beth Wilson and Head Coach Linda Hampton-Keith honored Taylor Davenport with her 1,000-career kill ball. Davenport earned her 1,000 career-kill last week on Oct. 27 at North Texas.
