Volleyball Upended by USF

11.3.23 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA – In front of a season-high 1,288 fans in McGonigle Hall on Friday afternoon, the Temple volleyball team dropped a three-set match to South Florida, 21-25, 22-25, 24-26. The Bulls' Marta Cvitkovic and Maria Clara Andrade combined for 33 kills in the victory.
 
In the loss, Temple dropped to 15-11 overall and 5-9 in the AAC, while USF improves to 15-10 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cvitkovic led the match with 17 kills, while Andrade put up 13 in the Bull's victory.
  • Caroline Dykes led the USF offense on the day with a match-high 37 assists.
  • Just one block shy of a season-best, the Owls earned 15 blocks in the match. Chelci Banks tied her career-high with eight blocks, matching the second time this season the junior earned that output.
  • Temple outside hitter Taylor Davenport earned a team-high 10 kills, while hitting .292 on the day. Olivia Vance had an efficient day with nine kills with a .316 hitting percentage.
 
SET 1 (TU 21, USF 25)
  • With the first set tied 3-3, the Bulls went on a 6-1 run, getting a pair of service aces from Caroline Dykes and Andrade.
  • The Owls would cut the South Florida lead to two (22-20) late in the set, scoring four times in a six-point span. Davenport led that run with two kills, while Vance chipped in with one.
  • USF used its own 3-1 run to end the set behind kills from the setter Dykes and Andrade.
 
SET 2 (TU 22, USF 25)
  • Set two featured 15 tie scores and eight lead changes.
  • Neither side would have an advantage during the set by more than three points.
  • USF hit a .450 in set two as Andrade led with six kills and a .556 hitting percentage. With only three kills in the set, Cvitokic hit. 600 with no errors on five total attacks.
  • The Owls offense kept it close in set two, hitting .250. Both Davenport and Vance had four kills apiece. Vance hit a team-high .500 in the second stanza.
  • With the Owls' offense keeping pace with the Bulls' offense, Temple's defense roofed the Bulls with six block assists. Banks and graduate transfer Avery Luoma led the Owls during the set with pair of block assists.
  • Tied at 22-22, South Florida won the final two points of the set, forcing attack errors by the Owls.
 
SET 3 (TU 24, USF 26)
  • Just like the second set, the score remained close throughout. With the Owls ahead 7-6, the Bulls took a 9-7 lead with the help of kills from Cvitkovic and Buse Hazan. Niki Khoshatefeh added a service in the run for USF.
  • South Florida extended its lead to 24-19, but Temple clawed back to tie the score 24-24 with a 5-0 spurt. During the comeback to extend the set, the Owls forced USF into a pair of attack errors.
  • The Bulls would go on to win the final two points by getting kills from Tizi Puljiz and Andrade.
  • Temple had six of its 15 blocks in the final set.
