Women’s Basketball Falls to Saint Joseph’s in Overtime, 67-65

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (2-4), fell to the Saint Joseph's Hawks (5-0) 67-65 in overtime. The Owls overcame a 17-point deficit and forced overtime behind a career night from freshman Tristen Taylor (21 points, 7 rebounds) and strong showings from Aleah Nelson (16 points, 8 assists) and Rayne Tucker (10 points, 12 rebounds).

First Quarter: Temple 11, Saint Joseph's 24
> St. Joe's started the game on a 7-0 run, before Tiarra East earned Temple's first two points at the free-throw line.
> After the Hawks built up a 19-4 lead, Taylor trimmed the deficit to 19-7 with a three-point basket at the 2:54 mark. East added a layup on the ensuing possession to trim lead to 10.
> Tucker led all players in rebounds in the first frame with four. Taylor led Temple in scoring with five.

Second Quarter: Temple 29, Saint Joseph's 39
> The Hawks opened the second on with four straight points (28-11, SJU).
> The Owls responded with a 11-0 run, behind another three-pointer from Taylor, two straight layups by Jaleesa Molina, two consecutive close-range baskets by Tucker (28-22, SJU).
> The game leveled out as both teams exchanged baskets. St. Joe's closed out the half on a 6-0 run to set the lead back at double digits going into the break.
> Taylor led the way for the Owls in the first half, scoring eight points off 3-4 shooting.

Third Quarter: Temple 44, Saint Joseph's 49
> The scoring was slow in the first few minutes of the third, with the team combing for seven total points in the first three plus minutes of action.
> Ines Piper converted back-to-back baskets to trim the Hawks' lead to 44-37 at the 5:00 minute mark.
> Tucker and Piper combined for the team's first 10 points in the quarter.
> Another three-point basket by Taylor at the 1:29 mark cut the deficit to 49-44.
> Piper made her presence felt in the quarter with a quarter-high six points while also contributing four rebounds and a block.

Fourth Quarter: Temple 59, Saint Joseph's 59
> Aleah Nelson started the fourth quarter on a high note, converting an and-one to bring Temple within one possession (49-47 SJU).
> At the 8:37 mark, Nelson gave the Owls their first lead of the game with a three-point basket from the left side that put Temple up 50-49.
> Scoring came slowly for the next four minutes. The Hawks built a three-point advantage before Taylor came back to tie things up at 55 with a three.
> Taylor took over the game, scoring nine straight for Temple (59-58)
> Saint Joseph's held possession with 28 seconds left trailing by one. Molina blocked an attempted from Tayla Bugler, but a Temple turnover and Saint Joseph's free throw tied things at 59 with 1.9 seconds left.
> Nelson hit off the rim on her final heave to push the contest into overtime.
 
Overtime: Temple 65, Saint Joseph's 67
> The Owls were held scoreless through the first four minutes and six seconds, as St. Joe's built  a narrow 64-59 lead. Molina scored a basket in the paint to cut the lead to three (64-61, SJU).
> Taylor hit a free throw to put the deficit at two, SJU hit two on the other end to extend the lead to three (65-62, SJU).
> The Owls could not close the gap, falling in overtime, 67-65.

Game Notes 
> Taylor achieved a new career high of 21. She also set a career-high on the glass with seven boards and in three-pointers made with four. Her 21 points are the most by a Temple freshman since 3-9-21 against Tulane.
> Rayne Tucker recorded her 7th career double-double; it is her first as an Owl. She recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds, it is her season-high in rebounds.
> Nelson passed for a season-high 8 assists. The guard scored in double-figures for the second straight game and grabbed a season-high six rebounds.
> Temple held a 48-36 advantage in team rebounding.
> Three or more Owls reached double figures for the fifth time this season.
> This is the 12th overall Big 5 women's basketball overtime game, and 6th between Temple and Saint Joseph's. It is the first since La Salle-Penn on 12-6-2016.

> Temple takes an eight-day break before hitting the hardwood again. The Owls will head to Arizona State for the Briann January Classic. The Cherry & White will face Xavier first on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. before battling Pacific the following day at 4 p.m. Both games will air on the Pac-12 Network and The Varsity Network App.
