Men's Basketball Topples UMES in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA – The Adam Fisher era got off to a strong start as the Temple University men's basketball team downed the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks 85-65 in the season opener on Monday night.

The Owls return to action on Friday when they travel to Annapolis, Maryland to take on Navy in the Veterans Classic. Tipoff from Alumni Hall is scheduled for 8:37 p.m. and can be seen nationally on CBS Sports Network. Fans can also listen to all the action on 1210 AM.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Jahlil White posted a double-double, the sixth of his career, with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
- Hysier Miller paced all scorers with 17 points. He also led the team with five assists.
- In his collegiate debut, Zion Stanford added 14 points.
- Shane Dezonie was the fourth Owl to hit the double digit mark, posting a career-high 12.
- As a team, Temple shot 90.0 percent (27-for-30) from the free throw line.
- TU held a 46-37 advantage on the boards. The Owls also turned up the defense, holding UMES to 34.8 percent shooting for the game.
- Fisher became the 12th coach in Temple men's basketball history to win his inaugural game as the Owls coach.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Defense ruled early as the Owls held the Hawks off the board for the first 4:12 of the contest while Temple built a 7-0 lead. TU pushed the lead in the next five minutes as Miller came alive, scoring seven points as part of a 15-4 run that saw the Owls up the advantage to 25-6 at the midway mark of the opening half.
- The Hawks started to find their way, scoring six in a row with just under seven minutes left and clawed to within 10 before a pair of Matteo Picarelli free throws gave the Owls a 35-23 lead at intermission.
- Temple saw UMES score the first bucket of the second half before taking control, going on a 10-0 run in just 78 seconds to go up 45-25 with 17:15 left in the contest.
- TU pushed the lead out as far as 31 mark and maintained a 20+ point advantage throughout the rest of the game.
