Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime to Cincinnati, 74-66

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (10-14, 5-7 AAC) fell in its first overtime game of the season, 74-66 to the Cincinnati Bearcats (9-15, 2-9 AAC). It was an airtight contest for all of regulation, with 24 lead changes and 22 ties.
Aleah Nelson and Tiarra East led the charge for Temple with 19 points each. Mya Jackson and Jillian Hayes scored 18 a piece for Cincinnati.
First Quarter: Temple 17, Cincinnati 13
> Temple got out to an early lead with four points from Nelson (10-6, TU).
> Temple established a lead of as many as seven in the first, leading 17-10 with 10 seconds left. A three-pointer from the Bearcats trimmed the deficit down to four.
> Nelson and Perea led the Owls after the first, with six and five points, respectively.
Second Quarter: Temple 34, Cincinnati 34
> Cincinnati gained its first lead of the game at 21-19.
> The Cherry & White ripped off seven straight to go up 26-21. Cincinnati did not stay down for long though, quickly retaking the lead at 29-28 with 3:43 left in the half.
> The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, going into the break even.
> Nelson led all scorers with 13 points at the half. Tiarra East added ten points and three boards.
Third Quarter: Temple 46, Cincinnati 48
> Temple dominated the first five minutes of the quarter. Four different Owls' scored to help push Temple to a seven-point lead. TU defense was stellar, allowing put one field goal prior to the third quarter media timeout (44-37, TU).
> Cincinnati exploded out of the timeout, tying the game at 44 on a quick 7-0 run.
> The Bearcats took the lead going into the quarter break with a score of 48-46.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 61, Cincinnati 61
> Cincinnati grew its lead to four (52-48) early in the fourth as both sides struggled to score.
> The Owls called timeout to spur a 4-0 burst, tying the game at 52. The two sides traded baskets for the next few minutes, with neither side able to gain a lead greater than one point until Cincinnati managed to get some separation with two minutes remaining (61-58, UC).
> Ines Piper sunk a layup to trim the deficit down to one. On the next possession, Perea buried a free throws to tie the game at 61 with a minute left.
> Nelson had a chance to win the game on the final possession, but she shot hit off the rim and sent the Owls to overtime.
Overtime: Temple 66, Cincinnati 74
> Cincinnati took a lead of four points to go up 67-63. Tiarra East countered with a critical possession featuring a block on one end and a three-pointer on the other to bring the Owls back within one.
> The Bearcats scored a bucket to extend the lead back to three. Piper missed two free throws, while Cincinnati went 1-2 on the other end (70-66, UC) with 25 seconds remaining.
> Temple could not capitalize the remainder of the game. The Owls fell 74-66.
Game Notes
> Three Owls scored in double figures, Nelson, East, and Perea. Perea and East also added 7 and 5 rebounds, respectively.
> Ines Piper nabbed four steals.
> Aleah Nelson tied her career-high in minutes with 42.
