Dunn Tallies 34, but Temple Falls at Cincinnati in Overtime

2.22.23 | Men's Basketball

CINCINNATI – Damian Dunn scored a game-high 34 points, including the 1000th point of his Temple career, but it was not enough as the Owls dropped a battle for fourth place in the American Athletic Conference to Cincinnati, 88-83, in overtime at the Fifth Third Arena Wednesday night.

Dunn was joined by teammates Hysier Miller (13 pts, 7 rebounds,  7assists), Zach Hicks (11 pts, 7 rebs) and Jamille Reynolds (11 pts) in double figure scoring with Hicks' three with 20 seconds forcing the overtime.

Landers Nolley II and David DeJulius led five Bearcat double figure scorers with 20 points.

> Cincinnati then went on a 16-4 run, taking as 30-24 lead on a Mika Adams-Wood layup with just under five minutes to play.  DeJulius scored nine straight points during the stretch, making five-of-five from the line.
> The Owls would cut the deficit to one on a Dunn three-point play, 30-29, but the Bearcats would push the lead back to six, 37-31, with 48 seconds on the clock following five straight points by Dan Skillings, Jr.
> Hicks would drain a three on the next possession to cut the deficit to 37-34 at the break.

Second Half
> Temple tied the game with a three by Miller to open the half, but the Bearcats would score six of the next eight points to push the margin back to six, 43-37.
> The Bearcats extended their lead to nine, 55-46, on a three by Skillings, but the Owls would answer with threes by Miller and Dunn to make it a one possession game, 55-42.
> After Cincinnati pushed the margin back to six, 65-59, the Owls would drain consecutive threes by Hicks and Dunn to tie the game at 65 with just over eight minutes remaining.
> The Bearcats answered with a 6-0 run to push the margin to 71-65.
> Free Throws by Reynolds and Dunn would cut the margin to 71-67 with 4:21 remaining, but the Bearcats' Jeremiah Davenport made two free throws a minute later to extend it back to six.
> After Cincinnati pushed the margin to seven, 75-68, with 2:38 to play, the Owls would score seven straight and tied the game on a Hicks three with 19.6 seconds to play.

Game Notes
> White injured his ankle and missed the final 14 minutes of the second half of the game.
> Dunn becomes the 55th Temple player to reach the 1,000-point mark.  He now has 1,008 points for his Owl career.
> Dunn made 12 of 14 free throws in the game, marking the fourth time this season he connected on 10 or more from the line.
> It was a relatively mistake free game as the Owls only turned the ball over eight times while the Bearcats had nine miscues.
> Miller, who made all three of his 3-point attempts, tied his career high with seven rebounds and has now scored in double figures in four straight games.
> Nolley scored nine of Cincinnati's 13 points in the extra period.
> It was the fifth overtime game this season for Temple with the Owls owning a 2-3 record in OT games.  Temple's record for overtime games in a season is six, set in the 1996-97 season.  The last time Temple played five OT games in a season was the 2011-12 campaign.  The Owls won all five that season.
