PHILADELPHIA – Temple Football head coach Stan Drayton announced the hiring of Dominique Bowman as cornerbacks coach and Jamel Mutunga as running backs coach.

Bowman comes to Temple after spending the 2022 season as the cornerbacks coach at Arkansas. Prior to his time with the Razorbacks, he spent time with Marshall (2021), Austin Peay (2019-20), UT-Martin (2017-18). He began his coaching career at Arkansas-Monticello in 2016.

"Coach Bowman will be a tremendous addition to our staff," said Drayton. "He's been recognized as an established defensive mind that has an ability to connect with his players on an elite level. Coach Bowman's vast experience will elevate the growth and development of his room."

Mutunga comes to Temple from the Indianapolis Colts where he spent the 2022 season as an offensive assistant. This marks a return to the East Coast for him having spent the previous 10 seasons with Muhlenberg (2012-13), Lehigh (2014-16), Princeton (2017-19) and Rutgers (2020-21).

"Coach Mutunga has gotten the best out of his running backs wherever he has coached," said Drayton. "He inherits a talented, young room here and I know that he will mentor and encourage that group to maximize their potential. Coach Mutunga has coached at the highest level our sport has to offer, and I look forward to bringing that expertise to our program."

Temple has begun its offseason workouts and will begin official spring practices later this month. The 2023 Cherry & White Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, at Chodoff Field at Edberg Olson Hall.

Dominique Bowman
Cornerbacks Coach
Dominique Bowman was on the Arkansas coaching staff in 2022 coaching the Razorbacks' cornerbacks, working alongside defensive coordinator Barry Odom, who was hired as the head coach at UNLV.

Bowman spent the 2021 season at Marshall, where he helped the Thundering Herd's pass defense rank 28th overall in the FBS and second in Conference USA allowing just 204.6 yards per game. In one year under Bowman, Marshall DBs Steven Gilmore and Micah Abraham both earned second-team All-Conference USA honors. Gilmore picked off a team-best three passes and broke up eight more while Abraham broke up a league-high 14 passes to rank fourth nationally.

Bowman brings a wealth of defensive knowledge to Broad Street, having served as a defensive coordinator at Austin Peay and UT-Martin. With Austin Peay in 2019-20 as the team's co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach, Bowman helped lead the Governors to the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference title – the school's first conference title since 1977 – and a pair of wins in the FCS Playoffs to reach the semifinals. Bowman's secondary was tops in the OVC allowing just 203.5 yards per game with the Govs' 15 interceptions also leading the league. His defense ranked among the best at the FCS level in defensive touchdowns (11th), total defense (12th), turnovers gained (13th), passing efficiency defense (14th), scoring defense (15th) and interceptions (16th).

His effort at Austin Peay earned him a spot with the prestigious American Football Coaches Association's 2020 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute, a program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession.

Prior to joining the Govs, Bowman worked at UT-Martin during the 2017-18 seasons. After coordinating one of the best defenses in the FCS in 2017 he was promoted to assistant head coach for the Skyhawks. His 2017 defense ranked among the best in FCS, leading the country in red zone defense (60.6%). The Skyhawks finished fourth in scoring defense (14.3 ppg) and first downs allowed (168), sixth in total defense (273.8 ypg) and third down conversion percentage (28.7%), eighth in fourth down conversion percentage (28.6%) and team passing efficiency defense (104.3), ninth in passing yards allowed (159.9 ypg) and 20th in rushing defense (113.9 ypg) nationally.

Bowman's first college coaching job was at Arkansas-Monticello in 2016 as the Boll Weevils defensive backs coach. The Weevils broke up 34 passes that year, including 11 interceptions.

The Memphis native started his coaching career in the Memphis high school ranks. His final two years at the high school level were at Cordova High School – a suburb of Memphis – where he led one of the best defenses in the state of Tennessee.

Bowman played college football at NAIA level Lambuth University for Hugh Freeze. Bowman earned all-conference honors as a defensive back for the Eagles as a junior and senior. He graduated from Lambuth in 2008 with a bachelor's degree.

He and his wife, Quay, have one daughter, Taylor.

Jamel Mutunga
Running Backs Coach
Jamel Mutunga spent the 2022 season with the Indianapolis Colts as an offensive coaching assistant as part of the Tony Dungy Minority Coaching Fellowship. Prior to his return to the NFL, he spent the 2020-21 seasons as an offensive quality control coach at Rutgers. He was tasked with working with the Scarlet Knights' running backs, a room that produced Kansas City Chiefs star, Isiah Pacheco, who earned All-Big Ten honors in both 2020 and 2021.

Mutunga spent the 2017-19 on staff at Princeton, where he coached the Tigers' running backs and helped Princeton's offense become one of the most prolific units in the FCS.

Princeton's backfield shined under the watch of Mutunga, as the Tigers produced the Ivy League's top rushing offense in three consecutive seasons. Princeton went 8-2 in 2019, with Collin Eaddy producing 12 rushing touchdowns and leading the team with 799 yards rushing to claim all-league accolades.

The Tigers went undefeated in 2018 and showcased back-to-back top-10 FCS team rushing totals in 2017 and 2018. Running back Charlie Volker earned first team all-conference laurels and rushed for an Ivy-best 14 touchdowns during the Tigers' undefeated campaign in 2018. Eaddy and Volker both earned multiple all-league recognitions.

During his Princeton tenure, Mutunga took part in the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Atlanta Falcons. Mutunga worked with the Falcons' running backs and wide receivers and also assisted with special projects for head coach Dan Quinn. Mutunga also took part in the program with the New York Jets in 2014.

Mutunga spent three seasons at Lehigh from 2014-16 as an offensive assistant coach. The Mountain Hawks possessed the No. 6 offense in the FCS during his final season on staff, as Lehigh running back Dom Bragalone rushed for 1,171 yards and 14 touchdowns to earn First Team All-Patriot League honors.

Mutunga's first collegiate coaching stop came at Muhlenberg, where he worked with the team's tight ends and running backs as an offensive assistant from 2012-13. The program produced 16 wins during his two-year stint in Allentown, Pennsylvania, which included an 8-3 record and an invitation to the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl in 2013.

A standout collegiate running back, Mutunga was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Gettysburg College from 2006-09. He had 2,804 career rushing yards and earned All-Centennial Conference honors three times. Mutunga tied a Centennial Conference record with five rushing touchdowns in one game and finished his career third on the Gettysburg all-time list with 38 touchdowns. A native of Bel Air, Md., Mutunga graduated from Gettysburg in 2011 with bachelor's degrees in business administration and economics.
