PHILADELPHIA - The Temple football team hosted its annual Cherry and White Spring Game at Edberg-Olson Hall on Saturday. It was an eventful day, complete with a street fair that filled Diamond Street.
The offense donned the cherry uniforms, while the defense wore the white jerseys. The format was non-traditional to that of a game, with the offense and defense taking part in a series of drives and game-scenarios. The first half was live drives, while the second half consisted of hand-picked game scenarios by Coach Drayton, which were not included in the final score. The scoring system was as follows:
Offense:
Touchdown = 6 points
Field Goal = 3 points
2-point Conversion = 2 points
Extra Point = 1 point
Explosive Play (Run of 12+ yards/Pass of 18+ yards) = 3 points
Two or more first downs on a drive = 1 point
Defense:
Three and Out = 1 point
Sack = 2 points
Missed Field Goal = 3 points
Turnover = 3 points
4th Down Stop or 2-point Conversion Stop = 3 points
Defensive Touchdown = 6 points
TFL = 1 point
Stopped Drive = 1 point
Penalties:
5-yard penalty = -1 point
10-yard penalty = -2 points
15-yard penalty = -4 points
Keys to the Game:
In a format designed to highlight the offense, they did not disappoint, defeating the defense 65-28. The offense converted on many short yardage situations, including going nearly perfect in the redzone. QB E.J. Warner had a productive afternoon, completing 15 of 23 attempts for 152 yards and two touchdowns. QB Quincy Patterson produced two highlight plays, completing a pair of 39-yard touchdown passes to WR Shekuna Kamara and WR John Adams.
WR Amad Anderson Jr. led all receivers in the first half with 58 yards on four catches. Anderson added a touchdown, as he was on the receiving end of a trick play pass from RB Darvon Hubbard.
Despite losing on the scoreboard, the defense produced some great plays. SAF Sam Martin intercepted a ball late in the first half that gave his side momentum. DL Lancine Turay had a key sack that resulted in a nice stopped drive for the defense. SAF Elijah Deravil led the defense with five tackles, while SAF Tywan Francis had a team-high two pass breakups.
Statistically Speaking:
QB E.J. Warner - 15/23, 152 yards, 2 TD
RB Kyle Williams - 5 carries, 47 yards
WR Amad Anderson Jr. - 4 catches, 58 yards, 1 TD
SAF Elijah Deravil - 5 tackles
DL Lancine Turay - 1 sack, 1 TFL
SAF Sam Martin - 1 INT
The Owls will open the 2023 season at Lincoln Financial Field against Akron on September 2nd.
