Temple Football Announces Kickoff Times for 2023 Primetime Contests and First Three Games

PHILADELPHIA – The American Athletic Conference announced the starting kickoff times for the first week of the 2023 season, along with several primetime and nationally-televised contests. Among the announcements were five Temple matchups, including the season opener against Akron.
The Owls will begin the season at Lincoln Financial Field against Akron on Saturday, September 2, at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+. That game will mark the first career opening day start for sophomore quarterback E.J. Warner who finished the 2022 season as the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.
The following week, Temple travels up the New Jersey Turnpike to Rutgers for a Saturday, September 9, contest. The game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and be available on the Big Ten Network.
The Owls return home for two more September games at the Linc – hosting Norfolk State and Miami (Fla.) in consecutive weeks. The Norfolk State game will kickoff at 2:00 p.m. and air on ESPN+; broadcast information and kickoff time for Miami are still TBD.
Temple will then begin its in-conference play with a primetime game on Thursday, September 28, at Tulsa on ESPN. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Owls' other scheduled primetime game is set for Friday, October 20, at 7:00 p.m., when they host SMU on ESPN2.
Temple's remaining kickoffs and networks will be announced during the season under the traditional 12-day selection process.
In 2022, head coach Stan Drayton led the Owls to a 3-9 record in his first season as head coach, including another four games that were winnable in the Owls final possession. Much of the offseason has been focused on finishing better to flip the record, compete for an AAC championship, and participate in a postseason bowl.
Drayton also has been busy this offseason reshaping the roster. His first full recruiting class saw the addition of size, length, and speed from a host of incoming freshmen and transfers with FBS experience who expect to contribute right away. That influx of talent, along with an aggressive style of play in all three phases of the team, has fans excited about a promising 2023 campaign.
