Five Owls Selected for 2023 Senior Nexus Championship

PHILADELPHIA - Five Owls have been named Senior Nexus Championship selections, as announced by USA Field Hockey. Molly Frey, Devin Kinzel, and Cassie Romanczuk were tabbed, with Lina Neilson and Peyton Rieger being named alternates. Both Kinzel and Neilson were selected for last year's championship.

Frey started all 19 games in the cage and allowed 24 goals, the fewest for Temple since 2007 (24), for a 1.20 GAA to rank 15th in the NCA. Her career GAA of 1.16 ranked fourth in program history and her season GAA of 1.20 ranks fifth. Frey posted 57 of the team's 62 saves for a .704 save percentage, seeing a career-high six saves at No. 13 UConn (10/28) and against No. 13 Old Dominion (11/4). The Eagleville, Pa. native posted six shutouts, including three in the first four games.

Kinzel started in all 19 games, recording four assists with a career-high three at Bucknell. The Virginia Beach, Va. nativet fired 20 shots with 10 on target.

Neilson saw action in all 19 games, posting one assist against Brown. The Mount Laurel, N.J. native fired three shots, putting two on target.

Rieger saw action in all 19 games, scored three goals and posting one assist She scored her her first career goal against LIU (9/9), and posted a season-high two goals against No. 13 Old Dominion in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals. The Woolwich, N.J. native fired seven shots with three on target.

Romanczuk sat out of the fall 2022 season due to injury, but returned to the field for spring 2023 action.

Formerly known as the Young Women's National Championship, the Senior NXC is held annually and features 144 elite high school, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes. During the spring and early summer, athletes trialed and trained at one of the seven USA Field Hockey High Performance Centers throughout the country for an opportunity to be selected tothe Senior NXC, a step along the Olympic Development Pathway program. All athletes that were previously named to the U.S. U-18, U-21, and Development Women's National Teams were also included within the selection.

The event will start with a team training session on July 11 in Virginia Beach, Va., with games starting on July 12 and running through July 16. The opportunity to be selected for the 2023-24 U.S. Women's National Team and Junior USWNT Selection Camps are at stake. Frey and Romanczuk will take the field as part of team Barcelona, while Kinzel is part of team Berlin.
