PHILADELPHIA — The Wuerffel Foundation today announced its preseason watch list for the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy – College Football's Premier Award for Community Service. Temple redshirt-sophomore cornerback Jalen McMurray is one of 110 players to make the initial list.
McMurray took a big leap on the field in 2022 and started in all 12 games for the Owls, recording 49 tackles, one TFL, one INT, seven pass break ups, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
McMurray is no stranger to community service nominations, having already been selected as an Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Work Team nominee on July 11. He is also a Temple single-digit jersey recipient, a high honor for Owls football players given to the toughest players on and off the field.
The Weurffel Trophy is considered one of the most meaningful awards in college sports, as it is awarded to student-athletes who make a positive impact on society and are committed to serving others. The trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for the University of Florida who has dedicated his career after football to community service. The Weurffel Trophy is part of the National Football Federation's Collegiate Awards, the first of which to honor service to others.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 2nd, and finalists will be announced on November 28th. The formal announcement of the 2023 recipient is scheduled to be made on December 7th or 8th during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN, and the presentation of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy will take place on February 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, GA.
ABOUT THE WUERFFEL TROPHY — Established in 2005, the Wuerffel Trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrates their impact, and inspires greater service across the nation. A member of the National College Football Awards Association, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. It is the first major award honoring the character of service to others.
