PHILADELPHIA — Temple graduate tight end David Martin-Robinson was named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 John Mackey Award, the Friends of John Mackey Association announced today. The award is presented annually to college football's most outstanding tight end and includes 48 players on the preseason watch list.
Despite missing the first three games of the 2022 season due to injury, Martin-Robinson finished fifth on the team in receiving yards (366). He concluded the year with 33 receptions and two touchdowns, averaging 11.1 yards per catch. Martin-Robinson had a career game against Houston last season, hauling in 10 catches for 114 yards.
Martin-Robinson has impressed on and off the field, earning his teammates' votes for captain status during the 2022 season. At the conclusion of the season, he was selected to Phil Steele's fourth-team All-AAC.
Martin-Robinson joins Oscar Cardenas (UTSA) as the only players nominated from the American Athletic Conference. This year's John Mackey Award watch list includes a wide variety of players across the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), led by Brock Bowers (Georgia) who was the 2022 award winner.
The award is named after John Mackey, who is considered one of the best to ever play the tight end position. Mackey earned three All-NFL selections and was a member of both the NFL All-Decade Team and the 50th Anniversary team. The Mackey Awards Foundation was established as a nonprofit charity in 2014, assisting student-athletes in need.
Martin-Robinson is the fifth Owl to be selected to a preseason award watch list this week, joining quarterback E.J. Warner (Maxwell Award), linebacker Layton Jordan (Bronko Nagurski Award), cornerback Jalen McMurray (Wuerffel Trophy), and kicker Camden Price (Lou Groza Award).
