Magee Selected to Butkus Award Watch List

8.10.23 | Football

PHILADELPHIA — Temple graduate linebacker Jordan Magee was named to the watch list for the Butkus Award on Monday, which is presented annually to college football's top linebacker.

Magee is coming off a productive 2022 season, where he earned All-AAC Honorable Mention (Pro Football Network) and fourth-team All-AAC (Phil Steele). He was an anchor on defense for the Owls last season, leading the team in tackles with 86 (3rd in AAC). Magee finished with nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks, which both ranked third on the Owls. He recorded a career-high 12 tackles against Navy and recorded eight or more tackles during three games on the season.

In addition to Magee's defensive prowess, the linebacker is a key component of Temple's identity as a football team. Last season, he was voted by his teammates as a team captain and earned a single digit jersey number, a Temple tradition awarded to the toughest players who lead on and off the field.

Magee is the only linebacker from the American Athletic Conference to be nominated for the preseason watch list. The preseason watch list includes 51 college football linebackers, a total; that represents the jersey number Butkus wore during his career.

The Butkus Award has been awarded to the top linebacker in college football since 1985. The honor is named after Dick Butkus, a prolific linebacker for the University of Illinois and the Chicago Bears. He was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.

ABOUT THE BUTKUS FOUNDATION — In 2008, The Butkus Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, took stewardship of the award to fully realize the original purpose of honoring athletic achievement and service to the community. Since that time, the award has honored the nation's best high school, college, and professional linebackers. An independent Butkus Award Selection Committee conducts the selection process each year. The committee is comprised of 51 experts, including professional, college, and high school scouts, and prominent sports journalists.
