Owls' Volleyball wins Third Straight With Sweep of Sacred Heart

Temple moves to 9-2 overall this season

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Temple volleyball closed out the Villanova Classic on Saturday afternoon with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-16 victory over the Sacred Heart Pioneers to win its third straight match and improve to 9-2 overall on the season. Graduate transfer Olivia Vance led the Owls offensively with a season-high 13 kills, hitting .600, while adding three blocks on the defensive side.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second straight match, the Cherry and White defense came away in the victory with 11 team blocks.
  • Senior Taylor Davenport tallied 11 kills and five blocks in the sweep.
  • Overall, each of the Owls' hitters with five more total attacks in the match, averaged a .318 hitting percentage or better.
  • The Owls' .446 hitting percentage is a season-high and marks the second time this season.
  • Vance's .600 hitting percentage ranks her fifth all-time in program history during the 25-point scoring format.  
 
SET 1 (TU 25, SHU 15)
  • As a team the Owls hit .464 in set one with Olivia Vance leading the team with six kills on eight total attacks, while Taylor Davenport added four kills on eight attacks.
  • Coming off a last night's 11 team block performance, five Owls recorded at least one block in the set victory.
  • Temple ran off three or more points on the Pioneers, including Vance and sophomore Samantha Jo Mikosky matching each other with a pair of kills.
 
SET 2 (TU 25, SHU 19)
  • The Cherry and White hit over .400 (.455) for a second straight set.
  • Graduate transfer Avery Luoma got into the hitting party with four kills on a .800 hitting percentage in set two, matching her fellow grad transfer, Vance.  
  • After the second set, the Saline, Mich. native, Vance totaled 10 kills.
  • The Owls defense thwarted the Sacred Heart offense with four team blocks, including a pair of individual blocks from Mikosky and junior Chelci Banks.
 
SET 3 (TU 25, SHU 16)
  • For a third straight set, the Owls hit .400 or better as Vance and fellow graduate transfer Jelena Prolic tied for the team-high with three kills in set with.
  • Freshman setter Lexi Yoza came off the bench, slicing her serve right through the Pioneers' defensive setup with two aces.
 
UP NEXT
The Owls' volleyball team starts American Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at home in McGonigle Hall versus the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
