Owls' Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to Tulsa to Begin AAC Play

PHILADELPHIA – On Wednesday in McGonigle Hall, the Temple Owls volleyball team started American Athletic Conference play with 19-25, 16-25, 20-25 loss to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
 
The Owls fall 9-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Golden Hurricane moves to 8-4 overall and 1-0 the AAC.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tulsa's Kaley Cassaday led all hitters with 18 kills on 37 total attacks, while hitting .486 in the sweep.
  • Two other Golden Hurricane players; Beth Bayless (11), and Arianna Mongare (10) assisted in the victory with double-digit kills.
  • Tulsa held Temple to a .222 hitting percentage during the match, and out totaled the Owls by 20 kills in the match, 52-32.
  • The Cherry and White's Taylor Davenport led the team on the night with nine kills.
 
SET 1 (TU 19, TUL 25)
  • With Temple ahead by one point, 8-7, the Golden Hurricane rattled four straight points to take the lead, 11-9. During the run, Beth Bayless had two of her three total kills in the set.
  • Off of the serve of Arianna Mongare's serve, Tulsa scored five straight points, including one of her two service aces on the night to pull away with the set victory.
  • Cassaday had eight of her match-high 18 kills in the win.
 
SET 2 (TU 16, TUL 25)
  • With the scored tied 6-6, the Golden Hurricane pulled away for the set win with seven straight points. Cassaday added three kills and Mongare pitched in with a pair during that run.
  • TU's Davenport made it interesting with back-to-back service aces to cut the lead to 23-15.
 
SET 3 (TU 20, TUL 25)
  • In the final set, Tulsa out hit Temple .405 to .207, with Mongare, Bayless, and Cassaday having  four kills apiece.
  • The Columbia, S.C. native Davenport led the Owls with four kills on nine total attacks in set three.
  • Tulsa jumped out to 7-3 advantage, but the Cherry and White clawed back to take its first lead of the set, 10-8, including scoring four straight points with kills from graduate transfer Avery Luoma and Davenport.
  • The Golden Hurricane extended it lead to four points, 19-15, but yet again Temple put up a fight, closing the lead to 20-19 as graduate transfer Olivia Vance connected on back-to-back kills.
  • Tulsa scored the last four points of the match to earn its eighth win of the season.
