Volleyball's Win Streak Stopped at Five With 3-0 Loss to Towson

9.2.23 | Women's Volleyball

TOWSON, Md. – The Temple volleyball team's win streak to start a season was halted on Saturday night during the Towson/Morgan State Tournament as they fell in straight sets (25-13, 25-22, 30-28) to the Towson Tigers.

The Owls fell to 5-1 on the season in the loss, while the Tigers improve to 5-1 in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Outside hitter Taylor Davenport was the only Owls' player with double-digit kills. The senior recorded 11, while graduate transfer Olivia Vance saw her first action of the season, adding nine kills.
  • The Tigers' Irbe Lazda had a match-high 15 kills, while teammate Victoria Barrett added 12 kills.
  • The home team Tigers hit .322, while holding Temple .175 over the three sets.

Set 1 (TU 13, TOW 25)
  • With the score tied at 1-1, Towson ran off nine straight points. During the run, Irbe Lazda had four of her match-high 15 kills in the set.
  • The Tigers never trailed in the set as they got the victory by the help of two rallies of seven or more points going unanswered.

Set 2 (TU 22, TOW 25)
  • Just on two occasions, the lead went above two points (3) during the second set.
  • Davenport showed out in the set as she had four of her team-high 11 kills in the set loss. During second stanza, the Columbia, S.C. native had 11 total attacks and no errors, good for a .400 hitting percentage.
  • Towson's Victoria Barrett led all players in the set with seven kills as she hit .779 on eight total attacks.

Set 3 (TU 28, TOW 30)
  • There were 16 ties and seven lead changes in the final set.
  • Other than one point, Temple did not trail throughout most of the early stages of the third set.
  • Davenport (6) and Vance (5) led the Owls in the third set with 11 combined kills.
  • Temple tried to hold onto a 18-17 lead, but the Tigers scored three consecutive points to take their first lead of the set.
  • Just as the Tigers took posession of the lead, the Cherry and White scored three consecutive points to take a 21-20 lead of its own. During that span, setter Lexi Yoza's second-ball kill got the rally started and a Davenport finished it off with a kill of her own.
  • Both teams traded points over the final stages of the set, but it was the Towson squad pulling out the victory.
