Volleyball Picks Up 3-2 Win Against Tulane; Improves to 3-0 in Five-Set Matches

The Owls earned their 11th win of the season, marking the first time since the spring of 2021

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team improved to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the American Athletic Conference on Friday night with a five-set, 17-25, 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 15-9 victory, over the Tulane Green Wave (4-12, 0-4 AAC). Offensively, the Owls were led by a trio of players with double-digit kills, including Olivia Vance (13), Chelci Banks (14), and Taylor Davenport (15).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Davenport moves closer to 1,000 kills in her Temple career with 15 in the five-set victory. The Columbia, S.C. native now sits with 915 in her four-year career.
  • Banks set her career-high with 14 kills on the night, to go along with her match-high six blocks.
  • For the second straight match and third time in six matches, Vance tied her season-high with 13 kills and tied a career-high with five blocks.  
  • Temple out blocked the Green Wave, 12-9, on the night and 11-2 over the final four sets.
 
SET 1 (TU 17, TUL 25)
  • The Green Wave had the advantage in first set in the block category 5 to 1.
  • Tulane held the Cherry and White to a .053 hitting percentage in set one.
  • Five of the seven Tulane players had two kills apiece, while hitting .278 percentage.
 
SET 2 (TU 25, TUL 17)
  • TU pulled away late in the set by going on an 8-1 run to jump ahead by eight points, 23-15. During the run, setter Ava Blascziek and outside hitter Jelena Prolic added a pair of service aces and while the Prolic and Vance added a pair of kills.
  • Vance, Banks, Davenport matched one another with three kills in set two, helping the squad to the tune of a .345 hitting percentage.
  • Katherine Crosley kept Tulane within striking distance in the set with five kills on 11 total attacks, while hitting .364.
 
SET 3 (TU 25, TUL 19)
  • With Temple trailing early, the Owls clawed their way back into the set with six consecutive unanswered points. Banks led the Cherry and White with two kills during the span.
  • Temple hit .281 in the set, while the Green Wave was held .043.
  • TU doubled up its opposition with 14 kills to seven in the third period.
  • Banks had a breakout set for Temple as she had a set-high six kills on nine attempts (.667).
 
SET 4 (TU 19, TUL 25)
  • Coming off the third set loss, Tulane jumped out to 7-3 advantage. In span, Temple recorded three straight attack errors.
  • The Owls fought back by going on a 7-3 run of their own, and tying the set at 10-10. The two teams fought over the lead heading into the media timeout, but the outside hitter Davenport put the Owls ahead, 15-13, with a pair of kills.
  • Tulane scored the final eight points of the fourth set on four Owls' errors.
 
SET 5(TU 15, TUL 9)
  • Temple controlled the final set for the win, by jumping out to a 7-1 advantage, winning six unanswered points. During the run, Davenport added a pair of kills, while graduate transfer Avery Luoma her only putaway of the set.
  • Vance led the Owls in the deciding set with three kills on four total attacks.

UP NEXT
Temple returns to action next weekend, Oct. 6 and Oct. 8 as they travel to Wichita State on Friday and then wrap up the weekend at UTSA on Sunday.
