Opening Tip
The Temple University men's basketball team wraps it two-game trip to Texas, taking on the Southern Methodist University Mustangs on Tuesday, January 16. Tipoff from Moody Coliseum in Dallas is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST.

Last Time Out - Men's Basketball Competes in Defensive Contest Against UNT
Jahlil White and Jordan Riley each scored in double figures as the Owls locked horns in a defensive battle with the North Texas Mean Green before being upended 69-51 on Saturday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Riley posted 13 to lead the team, adding seven boards.
  • White scored 12 points, 10 of them coming in the second half. He also grabbed seven rebounds and came away with three steals.
  • Hysier Miller scored eight with three assists.
  • Sam Hofman netted six and pulled down five boards.
  • Deuce Roberts scored his first career point in the contest.

Lead At The Break
It's now 17-for-17 that the team that leads at halftime goes on to win the game. By trailing 32-22 after the first 20 minutes against North Texas, Temple is now 8-0 when leading at intermission and 0-9 when trailing at the break.

Getting Right At The Stripe
The Owls posted a season-high mark of 93.8 percent at the free throw line, going 15-of-16 at North Texas on Saturday. Their previous best this year was 92.9 percent (10-of-11) against Ole Miss. In 2023-24, Temple is in the top-100 nationally and fifth in the AAC in free throw percentage and nets 15.1 points per game from the line.

Life Of Riley
After needing a couple of games to get his feet wet on the season, Jordan Riley has been one the top scorers for TU, averaging 13.9 points per game since November 19. He has also been consistent with his offense, reaching double figures in nine of the 11 games he has played during the span. The Brentwood, N.Y. native has also contributed on the defensive end, ranking second on the Owls in rebounding at 6.3 boards an outing, while leading Temple with 11 blocks and sitting third with 16 steals in the stretch.

Going To The Line For Three
Matteo Picarelli has shown an impressive knack for getting fouled shooting three-pointers. The senior from Milan, Italy has been hit on a trey eight times this season and the Owls have gone to the line on a triple nine times overall with Hysier Miller being the other recipient. TU has made 82.6 percent (19-of-23) of its free throws in such situations.

You've Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two
The Owls have done their best impression of the Artful Dodger this season, averaging 7.8 steals per game. The pace would be the highest total since 2018-19 when TU came away with 8.6 an outing. It is nearly three steals a contest more than last season when Temple took the ball off opponents 5.0 times. Individually, Steve Settle III and Hysier Miller are both in the top-15 in the AAC at 1.8 and 1.5 swipes per night, respectively. Both players have recorded their personal, single-game career-high in steals this season with Settle taking away six against Wichita State and Miller grabbing five at Navy.

Scouting Report
SMU is 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the AAC following a 75-64 win against East Carolina on Saturday. The Mustangs have won five of six with the only setback being a a three-point road loss against No. 15 Memphis. SMU was selected seventh in the American preseason poll.

Leading the offense for the Mustangs is Zhuric Phelps at 14.5 points per game. Also in double figures is Chuck Harris, netting 12.5 a night. Samuell Williamson and Tyreek Smith create a two-headed rebounding beast at 6.5 and 6.3 boards a night, respectively. B. J. Edwards has 57 assists.

For a second consecutive game, the Owls will face an opponent that hangs its hat on its defense as SMU is second in the AAC and eighth nationally in points per game allowed at 61.8. The Mustangs have been the best in NCAA Division I in defensive three-point field goal percentage at 25.6 and are second in overall FG% by the opposition at 36.7.

Free throws have been one knock against SMU, which is in the bottom-75 nationally in makes and attempts per game and percentage. It is also 11th in the AAC in turnovers, coughing the ball up 12.3 times an outing.

Rob Lanier is in his second season leading the Mustangs and already has SMU above last season's win total. In nine total years as a collegiate head coach, he has guided his teams to the NCAA Tournament in 2002 and 2022, winning a First Four game with Siena in his first appearance. Prior to coming to Dallas, he posted a 53-30 record at Georgia State.

All-Time Series
Tuesday is the 20th meeting between Temple and SMU with the Mustangs holding an 11-8 series lead.  The teams have traded wins in the last three meetings.

Last Time Against SMU
Hysier Miller hit a jumper in the paint to tie the score with 11 seconds remaining, but a free throw with 0:03 left lifted the Mustangs to a 72-71 win on February 8, 2023.

Prior Experience
Hysier Miller and Jahlil White are the only two Owls to have faced SMU while wearing the Cherry and White, but they are not the only ones who have played the Mustangs. Shane Dezonie scored nine points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from beyond the arc and also pulled in five rebounds against SMU while playing for Vanderbilt on December 4, 2021.

You Should Come To Our Place Sometime
Tuesday is the second consecutive matchup and third in the last four that the Owls have played at SMU. The lone game at the Liacouras Center came on February 16, 2022. The Mustangs are not scheduled to come to Philly in the 2023-24 season.

Up Next
Temple returns home for a pair of conference games, starting with a contest against Rice on Saturday, January 20, followed by South Florida on January 24. Tipoff versus Rice from the Liacouras Center is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
