Washington Scores Career-High as Women’s Basketball Downs Tulane, 68-50

NEW ORLEANS – The Temple women's basketball team (11-9, 5-3 AAC) claimed victory over the Tulane Green Wave (8-11, 1-7 AAC), 68-50 Sunday afternoon in New Orleans. With the win, Temple improves to 3-1 in conference road games on the year. The victory moves Temple into a tie for fourth place in the American Athletic Conference.
Demi Washington and Tarriyonna Gary each impressed for the second straight game. Washington led all scorers with 22 points to tie her career high. Gary contributed 16. It marks the second straight game for both they landed in double figures.
First Quarter: Temple 23, Tulane 13
> After Tulane drew first blood, Demi Washington scored the first four points for Temple.
> With the game knotted up at 6, Tarriyonna Gary knocked down the game's first three pointer to give the Owls a 9-6 lead going into the first media timeout.
> Gary hit her second straight three coming out of the timeout to give Temple a 12-8 lead. Washington scored again to extend the lead to six. The Green Wave scored the next five points (14-13, Tem).
> Temple responded to Tulane's run by going on a tear. The Owls scored each of the next nine points to take a 23-13 lead going into the quarter break.
> Gary dominated the first quarter, scoring 11 points opposed to 13 total for Tulane. She also tied for the quarter-high with three boards.
Second Quarter: Temple 40, Tulane 22
> After two scoreless minutes to kick off the second frame, Jaleesa Molina and Tiarra East scored a pair of quick baskets to extend the run to 14-0 (28-13, Tem).
> The Owls held Tulane scoreless for the first 5:13 of the quarter.
> The Green Wave finally broke through with 4:47 left on the clock. Temple responded with another 8-0 run, including five points from Aleah Nelson (36-15, Tem).
> Things evened out as the quarter came to a close. Washington scored the final seven points for Temple.
> Gary and Washington led the way with 11 and 13 points, respectively with a combined 67% from the field.
Third Quarter: Temple 52, Tulane 38
> Ines Piper scored the first points of the second half. The Owls went a 5-0 run, holding Tulane scoreless again for the first 2:37 of the quarter.
> The next few minutes of action featured no field goals made, with the only points coming in the form of two made free throws from The Green Wave. Gary ended the drought with a mid-range jumper (47-26, Tem).
> The scoring came fast and furious in the closing minutes of the quarter. Tulane outscored Temple 10-5.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 68, Tulane 50
> Rayne Tucker converted an and-one opportunity to immediately slam the door on any chance of a Tulane rally (55-38, Tem).
> The game once again ground to a halt with 3 minutes of scoreless basketball. Gary snapped the streak and put Temple back up by 20, 60-40.
> Tulane countered with a 6-0 run that was ended by Washington.
> The Green Wave cut into the lead, but it was far too late to muster any type of meaningful comeback attempt. Temple took the game, 68-50.
Game Notes
> Temple and Tulane are now 8-8 all time. After defeating The Green Wave last season, this is the first time the Owls have won back-to-back games against Tulane since winter of 2017.
Statistically Speaking
> Demi Washington has scored in double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time since November (Bucknell and Ole Miss). Gary accomplished the same feat for the first time since February of 2023.
> East tied her season-high in rebounds with seven.
> Temple dominated the ball control stats winning the turnover battle 16-9, and the steal battle 7-2.
> This was Tarriyonna Gary's second straight game with at least four three pointers. She is the second player to accomplish this feat this season, with Nelson being the other.
