Lacrosse Picked Third in AAC Poll; Shallow, Mastropietro, Roth Earn Preseason Honors

IRVING, Tex.- Senior defender Katie Shallow has been named AAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, announced by the conference on Tuesday. She is joined by grad students Belle Mastropietro and Mackenzie Roth on the preseason all-conference team. Temple was also picked third in the coaches' poll.

Shallow enters her senior season with a pair of All-AAC honors under her belt already, earning first team honors last year and second team honors in 2022. She started all 16 games for the Owls in 2023, picking up 43 ground balls and causing 23 turnovers, leading the team and ranking third in the conference in both categories. She was twice named AAC Defensive Player of the Week last season and netted her first career goal vs. Delaware on February 22.

Mastropietro is coming off a 2023 season that saw her earn AAC Midfielder of the Year and first team honors, in addition to being named to the IWLCA All-Region second team and Tewaaraton Award watchlist. She ranked top ten in the AAC in goals (39), assists (20) and draw controls (94), leading Temple in all categories. She is the Owls' program record holder for draw controls with 286 in her career, and has added 146 goals, 58 assists, 88 ground balls, and 53 caused turnovers during her time on North Broad.

Roth was named to the All-AAC second team last season and the first team in 2022. She started all 16 games last year as a captain, finishing second on the team in points with 37 (21 G, 16 A). She ranks sixth on Temple's all-time list with 76 career assists to go along with 65 goals, 54 ground balls, and 22 caused turnovers.

Temple was runner-up to James Madison and Florida in the preseason poll, with the Dukes and Gators earning four and three first place votes, respectively. Cincinnati and East Carolina were tied for fourth, followed by Vanderbilt in sixth and Old Dominion in seventh. The Owls will host Colgate to open the season on February 10 and open AAC play at home vs. Vanderbilt on March 16.
