Volleyball Edged By USF in Friday’s AAC Match

11.1.24 | Women's Volleyball

TAMPA, Fla. – The Temple Owls volleyball team dropped to 11-14 overall and 3-8 in the American Athletic Conference with a 22-25, 18-25, 15-25 loss to South Florida on Friday at The Corral. In the win, USF improved to 14-9 overall and 10-2 in the AAC.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maria Clara Andrade had a match-high 15 kills for the Bulls with teammate Naiya Sawtelle following with 14.
  • The Bulls combined for eight service aces in the victory.
  • Freshman Christiana Greene and graduate student Taylor Davenport combined for 16 kills to lead Temple with both players adding eight putaways apiece.
     
SET 1 (TEM 22, USF 25)
  • The Bulls forced Temple to call timeout, jumping out to a 11-5 lead with the help of a 4-0 run. Leading to the timeout, USF held the Owls to two kills during that stretch. Sawtelle had a USF-high three kills during the run along with two kills from Andrade and Caroline Dykes.
  • With South Florida ahead 15-9, Temple went onto to score 11 of the next 15 points to cut the lead to one point at 20-19. During the run, the Columbia, S.C. native Davenport led the Owls with two of her team set-high four kills.
  • The Bulls hung onto win with Sawtelle adding her final two kills of her team's final three points. Sawtelle added a set-high six kills.
  • Both team's hit over .300 in the set with South Florida hitting .354, while Tempe hit .303.
  • The Owls' Alyssa Finister and Greene connected with three kills apiece with the junior Finister hit .375, tying with Davenport for the set-high.
 
SET 2 (TEM 18, USF 25)
  • Set two started off closely played with USF leading by a point, 5-4, but then scored six of the next seven points, forcing a timeout by the Cherry and White.
  • The Bulls never allowed Temple to cut into its lead, only allowing them to cut it to four points on five occasions.
  • The home team hit .423 in the set, while holding TU to .203.
  • Andrade led the set with five kills, hitting .625.
 
SET 3 (TEM 15, USF 25)
  • The Owls and Bulls traded the first 14 points in the third set. Temple freshman Sydney Jones and Andrade matched each other with a pair of kills during that stretch.
  • USF grabbed the lead with four straight points with back-to-back kills from Andrade and a block.
  • Fresh out of the media timeout, Temple scored back-to-back points to cut into the lead to make it 15-11, the Bulls turned the momentum by scoring seven of the next nine points. Tizi Puljiz started the rally with a kill and a service ace.
  • South Florida tallied four service aces in the set with Lia Schneider with a set-high two.
