Stanford's Career Day Leads Temple Past Drexel

11.12.24 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIAZion Stanford had a career game with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting as the Temple men's basketball team withstood a late Drexel charge as the Owls topped the Dragons 69-61 in a Big 5 game on Tuesday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Stanford had a pair of three pointers in the game, also going 7-for-9 from inside the arc.
  • Jamal Mashburn Jr. was in double figures with 20, adding five rebounds and four assists. He shot 9-for-10 from the free throw line.
  • Babatunde Durodola pulled in a career-high nine rebounds to join Steve Settle III in leading the Cherry and White. Quante Berry had a personal best eight boards.
  • The Owls held on to the ball, committing just seven turnovers, the second consecutive game in single digits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stanford carried the load early for Temple, scoring the first 10 points of the game for the Owls. The contest remained close through the majority of the first half as neither team held more than a five point lead through the first 12 minutes.
  • The Cherry and White expanded the lead to 30-23 on a trey by Stanford at the six-minute mark. The Dragons sliced the lead to two but a missed layup from Drexel led to a fastbreak three-pointer from Matteo Picarelli as Temple took a 37-32 lead into the break.
  • Temple opened the second half connecting on five of its first 10 shots, using a 13-6 run to help push the advantage to 50-38 five minutes into the frame.
  • Drexel came back with two triples in quick succession, but a thunderous putback dunk by Dillon Battie followed by a steal and slam by Berry sent the lead to 55-44 and forced a DU timeout with 11:32 remaining.
  • As is the case with many Big 5 games, down the stretch it was a battle as the Dragons quickly got the lead down to three. Temple never relinquished the lead, making all four of its shots at the line in the final 1:16 to seal the win.
