Men’s Basketball Suffers Setback at Boston College

11.15.24 | Men's Basketball

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Temple University men's basketball team fought back from a double-digit, first-half deficit to take a five-point lead in the second before falling just short in a 72-69 loss at Boston College on Friday night. Graduate student Jamal Mashburn Jr. led the Owls with 23 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Redshirt senior Steve Settle III set the tone early for the Owls, scoring 10 first-half points on an efficient 4-of-6 shooting.
  • The home team was on fire offensively through the first 20 minutes, shooting 56.3 percent from the field and connecting on 6-for-13 from three-point range.
  • Temple trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half but slowly chipped away and trailed by just five, 46-41, at intermission.
  • The Owls and Eagles traded scores to open the second half, but Temple regained control after the first media timeout with a 9-0 spurt.
  • A coast-to-coast layup by sophomore Zion Stanford put the Owls in front, 55-50, with 13:24 remaining in the second stanza.
  • The game remained tightly contested with Elijah Gray stepping up, hitting a three-pointer and quickly following it with a layup to put the score at 61-47 in favor of the visitors with 8:42 remaining.
  • Stanford came up big defensively with three crucial late-game blocks, helping the Owls stay within striking distance.
  • After B.C. took a four-point advantage, Mashburn Jr. hit a three with 20 seconds left to bring Temple within one. But that is as close as it would get as the Eagles held on.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mashburn Jr. has scored 20 or more points in four straight games, marking the second time in his career he has achieved the feat.
  • Gray scored 10 points and recovered five rebounds in his Temple debut.
  • Stanford set a career-high with three blocks as Temple recorded a season-high six rejections.
  • Durodola shot 5-for-7 from the free-throw line, and finished with seven points and seven boards.
UP NEXT
The Owls will next compete in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament against another ACC opponent in Florida State. Tip-off from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. is set for 5:00 p.m. on Nov. 22.
