Women’s Basketball Falls in Double Overtime at Charlotte

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (12-10, 6-4 AAC) lost the Charlotte 49ers (13-9, 6-4 AAC), 88-81. Despite holding a double-digit lead midway through the game, the Owls were unable to hold off the comeback effort by the 49ers.
The Owls saw a well-rounded team effort on offense, as all nine players that saw the court scored points.
First Quarter: Temple 20, Charlotte 13
> After a scoreless opening two minutes out of the gates, Charlotte started off the scoring with a 4-0 run. Aleah Nelson notched the Owls' first basket, hitting a midrange shot with 6:59 remaining in the quarter.> A 7-2 run by Temple gave the Owls their first lead of the game.That extended to a 14-4 run giving the Owls a 14-8 lead at a timeout with 3:20 remaining.
> Both teams exchanged baskets in the final stages of the first quarter, as Temple held a seven-point lead after one.
> Five Owls scored in the first quarter, as the team shot 8-19 (42.1%) from the field.
> Temple forced nine turnovers in the first quarter, converting eight points off those turnovers.
Second Quarter: Temple 39, Charlotte 27
> The second quarter started much like the first, with the initial bucket not coming until 7:26 by Charlotte.> A jumper by Tristen Taylor followed by a three from Tarriyonna Gary pushed Temple's lead to 10 with 6:51 remaining in the half (25-15, TU).
> A flurry of offense from both teams gave the Owls a 29-21 lead at the media timeout.
> Fourteen points off the bench in the second quarter, including three threes, pushed the Temple lead to 39-27 at halftime.
> All eight Temple players who took a shot before halftime, have scored. Kendall Currence led the team in scoring at halftime, netting eight points.
> Temple shot 57.1% from the field in the second quarter (8-14), including 50% from beyond the arc (3-6). The Owls capitalized off 20 points in the paint during the first half.
Third Quarter: Temple 57, Charlotte 43
> A fastbreak basket by Demi Washington got the scoring started in the second half for the Owls. After an exchange of free throws and a jumper from Charlotte, Temple held a 43-32 lead at the first media timeout.> Out of the timeout, Temple embarked on a 6-0 run to build a 49-32 lead with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter.
> A 6-2 run by the 49ers trimmed the Owls' advantage to 51-38 with 1:32 left in the frame. Temple had a stretch of 1-10 from the field during that time.
> An inbound steal and layup by Gary with 0:03 ended the quarter with a 57-43 lead for the Owls.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 66, Charlotte 66
> A 11-2 run by Charlotte to start the quarter cut the lead to five (59-54, TU).> The 49ers cut the lead to four, after a three-pointer with 4:57 remaining (61-57, TU).
> After the media timeout, the Owls went on a 5-0 run to rebuild a 66-57 lead with 3:21 remaining in regulation.
> A 9-0 run capped by two free throws by Charlotte with 28.4 remaining tied the game at 66-66.
> Each team had a chance to end the game with under 4 seconds but neither made their shot.
> After shooting under 50% in the first three quarters, Charlotte hit on 85.7% (6-7) in the fourth to outscore Temple 23-9.
First Overtime: Temple 72, Charlotte 72
> Off the tip-off, Tristen Taylor converted a quick layup to give the Owls a 68-66 lead.> The 49ers responded with a 6-2 run, taking a 72-70 at the media timeout with 1:31 remaining.
> With 1:10 to go, Gary hit a midrange jumper to tie the game at 72-72.
> A last-second three-pointer by Charlotte was waived off due to a clock malfunction, sending the two teams to a second overtime.
Second Overtime: Temple 81, Charlotte 88
> In the early stages, Charlotte converted a flurry of free-throws and Ines Piper scored in the paint to give Temple a narrow 75-74 lead with just over three minutes to go.> A clutch three-pointer by Gary tied the game at 78-78 with just over two minutes remaining.
> The game slipped away from the Owls, as the 49ers scored eight unanswered to build an insurmountable lead. Gary added a late three that trimmed the lead to 86-81 with 21.7 seconds remaining.
Game Notes
> All nine players had at least one field goal and a rebound.> Temple last played overtime on December 22, 2023, vs. Saint Joseph's and lost 67-65. The last time the Owls played multiple overtimes was a 5OT game at Memphis on February 18, 2016, which holds the record for longest college women's basketball game.
> The loss to Charlotte moves Temple's all-time series record against the 49ers to 9-4.
> With the Charlotte/Temple results and Tulsa's win over North Texas, there is now a three-way tie for first place in the American Athletic Conference standings. The Owls are one game back, in a four-way tie for second.
Statistically Speaking
> Gary recorded four steals, which ties a season high.
> Tiarra East tied a season high in rebounding, with seven.
> Kendall Currence added nine points off the bench, just one point shy of her season-high mark of 10 points, which she has recorded twice this season.
>Temple held a 20-8 advantage in offensive rebounding. This led to 10 second-chance points, compared to four for Charlotte.
> The Cherry & White finished the day with 12 steals as a team.
