Temple Athletics and Name, Image, & Likeness Update
5.1.24 | General
PHILADELPHIA - Earlier this month the NCAA Division I Council adopted a proposal to allow institutions to provide assistance in name, image, and likeness (NIL) activities for student-athletes who choose to disclose their NIL agreements. This new legislation permits schools to provide increased NIL-related support for its student-athletes, including, but not limited to identifying NIL opportunities, providing educational services, and facilitating deals between student-athletes and third parties.
The new legislation furthers the student-athlete protections enacted in January by requiring that students maintain authority over all terms of their NIL activities and by allowing students to opt-in to institutional assistance, rather than making it a requirement.
In line with this new legislation, Temple Athletics will be unveiling additional services and resources for its 525 student-athletes. Through strategic partnerships with Van Wagner, Influencer, campus partners such as the Beasley School of Law, the School of Sport, Tourism & Hospitality Management and the Fox School of Business, and leadership from The TUFF Fund, Temple Athletics is prepared to further enhance the opportunities available to its student-athletes.
"This new legislation was a necessary step forward in the NIL space," said Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Student Affairs Kristy Bannon. "To allow institutions to go beyond the provision of education and be permitted to provide NIL-related services and increased NIL opportunities to our student-athletes is crucial for their holistic development and lifelong learning experiences."
While we are excited to share these new opportunities and partnerships with Temple Owl fans as they go live, we continue to encourage those who want to be involved in the NIL space to visit Temple's NIL page for ways to support Temple student-athletes.
