Football's McIlquham on the Wuerffel Trophy and AFCA Good Works Team Watch Lists
8.1.24 | Football
Atlanta, GA –The Wuerffel Foundation announced today its Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List for the 2024 season, consisting of a record 111 nominees representing players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), including Temple long snapper Andrew McIlquham.
The Groton, Conn., native is entering his third season at Temple and has been a significant member of the Owls over his first two years. He earned the primary long snapping role as a walk-on in 2022 and has taken every punt and FG/PAT snap over those first two seasons.
Nothing has been handed to McIlquham and he has earned many things through his hard work. He holds a 3.44 GPA in marketing which has led him to apprenticeships with both Learfield and the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent the 2023 summer selling advertising for Learfield and interned with the Eagles in their 2024 summer youth flag football program.
He has earned Temple's Man of Service Award in both 2022-23 and 2023-24, given to the member of the Temple Football program who leads in most community service hours. Among the many programs he has participated in is the annual Eagles Huddle Up for Autism event. For two years in the row, he volunteered for this five-hour community service event where he teaches the game of football to children and adults who have autism.
His biggest accomplishment, however, is that he created a reading program for kindergarten students at Duckery Elementary school. He and other players read books to the classroom and have one-on-one mentorship sessions. The program increased the reading scores levels with the kindergarten students at Duckery.
His influence on the Temple community has been so impactful that he earned a scholarship heading into the 2024 season.
College Football's Premier Award for Community Service and one of the most meaningful awards in collegiate sports, The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service. The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy embodies Wuerffel's commitment to being a humanitarian, while honoring student-athletes who are inspired to serve others and make positive impacts on society. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Trophy's founding, and the Foundation will recognize the first nineteen recipients throughout the fall season.
"I am deeply honored to see such outstanding individuals nominated for this year's Allstate Wuerffel Trophy," said Wuerffel. "Their commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in their communities is truly inspiring. Throughout my life and career, I have always believed in the importance of putting others before yourself and striving to make a difference. These nominees exemplify those values, and I am proud to celebrate their dedication to humanitarian efforts and selfless service."
Announced recently, the Wuerffel Foundation partnered with Allstate to unify college football's highest community service honors. Eleven of the Watch List nominees will be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and will be Allstate Wuerffel Trophy semifinalists.
The 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy finalists and recipient will be selected by an illustrious national voting committee, including a fan vote component, and announced on ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 12. The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Presentation Gala will take place February 1, 2025, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
