Field Hockey Opens Season with Pair of Weekend Contests

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University field hockey team opens its season with a pair of games this week, hosting Queens on Friday, August 30 and traveling to Lock Haven on Sunday, September 1.
 
Scouting Temple
  • Alizé Maes was picked as the BIG EAST preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Tess Muller was a unanimous selection as preseason All-Conference.
  • The Owls were selected third in the BIG EAST preseason poll, tied with UConn with 33 points.
  • Temple returns several key players from last season. Muller was a First Team All-BIG EAST and Second Team All-Region selection for a year where she led the team with 18 points on six goals and six assists.
  • Maes was a BIG EAST Second Team selection and finished seventh in the conference with eight assists.
  • Devin Kinzel was second on the squad with four goals. Caitlyn Amsden added six assists.
  • Michelle Vittese enters her fourth season as head coach and has guided TU to the BIG EAST postseason in each of her first three years.
 
Scouting Queens (N.C.)
  • The Royals are playing in their third ever season as a Division I school.
  • Prior to its transition to the new higher level, Queens qualified for five consecutive South Atlantic Conference Carolinas tournaments.
  • Brandi Kist is in her ninth season as the head coach of the Royals and has guided the team from a club sport to an NCAA D1 program.

Friday is the first ever meeting between the Owls and the Royals.
 
Scouting Lock Haven
  • The Bald Eagles are coming off a 5-12 season in 2023 when they also went 2-5 in the A10.
  • LHU returns a pair of potent offensive pieces. Broke Hofsass topped Lock Haven with 19 points (8G, 3A) a year ago. Costanza Lopez Zabala was second on the team with 13 points (6G, 1A).
  • Kelsey Felix, who saw all but 27 minutes in goal last year also returns, after posting a 2.31 goals against average and a 71.7 save percentage in 2023.
  • Anna Rogers is in her second season as the head coach of the Bald Eagles and has been on the staff as an assistant coach since 2016.
 
All-Time Series
Temple holds a 5-3-1 advantage in nine previous matchups between the Owls and the Bald Eagles. TU has won the last two contests, including a 4-0 victory in 2022.

Up Next
The Lock Haven match starts a stretch of five games in a row on the road, continuing with a trip south to face Virginia on September 6 and Richmond on September 8.
