Men's Basketball Takes Down No. 18 Memphis, 88-81

1.16.25 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple University men's basketball team exhibited toughness and grit for an entire 40 minutes, culminating with an 88-81 victory over No. 18 Memphis in American Athletic Conference action on Thursday night inside Liacouras Center. Graduate student Jamal Mashburn Jr. led five Owls in double figures with 21 points, while senior Shane Dezonie posted his second straight double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams went back and forth for the first 10 minutes, before Temple went on a quick 7-0 run to force a Memphis timeout and take a 23-17 lead.
  • A pair of three-pointers from Dezonie pushed the advantage to nine at 32-23, and the Owls went into the locker room with a 36-30 advantage.
  • Mashburn Jr. had a team-high 11 points in the first half that saw Temple outrebound Memphis, 22-12.
  • With possession to start the second half, sophomore Quante Berry connected on a three-pointer to open the scoring in the stanza and bump the cushion back to nine.
  • Another triple from senior Steve Settle III gave the Owls a double-digit advantage at 48-37, and the lead grew to as many as 15 points before Tigers clawed their way back to within striking distance.
  • A three from Colby Rogers brought the visitors to within six at 58-52, and a three-point play by PJ Haggerty put the score at 65-62 in favor of the Owls with 6:22 remaining.
  • Memphis pulled to within two a possession later, but Mashburn Jr. drained a clutch three-pointer to regain a five-point lead.
  • The Tigers continued to press and try to come all the way back, but the Owls remained poised under pressure and fended off every challenge down the stretch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • For the game, Temple outboarded Memphis by an incredible 49-25 margin, the largest rebounding margin for the Owls since Dec. 10, 2019 when they were +29 vs. Saint Joseph's.
  • In addition to Dezonie's 13 rebounds, Settle III added six and Mashburn Jr. chipped in with five, as did freshman Aiden Tobiason.
  • Berry had an impressive game for Temple, posting 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Settle III finished with 11 points, and sophomore Zion Stanford added 10.
  • The Owls improved to 7-0 at Liacouras Center this season, matching their best home record to start a season since 2018-19.
  • Haggerty, the second-leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference coming into the game, was held to just two points in the first half but finished with 21.
