Mashburn Jr. Leads Men's Basketball to Third Straight AAC Victory

1.19.25 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Graduate student Jamal Mashburn Jr. registered a season-high 32 points on an efficient 12-of-16 shooting, and the Temple men's basketball team improved to 8-0 at the Liacouras Center this season with an 80-77 victory over Tulane on Sunday. The win was the team's third straight and the Owls improved to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in American Athletic Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls started slow offensively, missing their first three shots as Tulane took an early 8-2 lead.
  • Jamal Mashburn Jr. was the catalyst to kickstart Temple's offense, scoring seven points as part of a 9-2 spurt that gave the home team an 11-10 advantage with 13:10 to go in the period.
  • The remainder of the first half was close, with neither team gaining a lead larger than four. A three-pointer from senior Steve Settle III pushed Temple in front, 33-29, before the Owls went into the locker room with a one-point lead.
  • Mashburn Jr. had a team-high 12 points through the first 20 minutes, while a trio of Owls - Settle III, Quante Berry and Zion Stanford - adding seven apiece.
  • Tulane shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the opening half but the Temple forced the Green Wave into 10 turnovers.
  • The second half began with the two teams still close, before a 7-0 spurt by the Owls extended their lead to 51-42 with 14:11 remaining.
  • Senior Shane Dezonie capped the run with a tomahawk dunk on the fastbreak, while Stanford and Mashburn Jr. also scored buckets.
  • The Green Wave came right back with a four-point play on the next possession, and cut the margin to just one at 55-54 with 11:10 on the clock.
  • From there, Temple scored 11 of the next 15 points to regain a nine-point cushion, with Dezonie connecting on a big three-pointer from the corner.
  • Tulane did not go down without a fight, and had a pair of chances to tie the score but each time the three-point attempt was off the mark as the Owls held on.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • For the second straight game, Temple won the rebounding battle by double digits as the team outrebounded Tulane, 33-20.
  • Mashburn Jr.'s point total was just one shy of his career high of 33, set on Jan. 23, 2023 against Nevada while he was a member of the New Mexico program.
  • Three other Owls registered double figures in points, including 13 from senior Shane Dezonie, who extended his double-figure scoring streak to seven games. Stanford and Settle III added 11 apiece.
  • Rowan Brumbaugh led Tulane with 20 points, leading four Green Wave players in double digits.
