Berry Registers Career-High 24 in Road Loss at North Texas

1.22.25 | Men's Basketball

DENTON, Texas - Sophomore Quante Berry registered a career-high 24 points but the Temple University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought road decision at North Texas, 76-67. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Owls, who fall to 12-7 on the season and 4-2 in American Athletic Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half was a low-scoring 20 minutes for both sides, and a late spurt by the Mean Green put the home team on top, 27-26, at intermission.
  • Sophomore Zion Stanford was a bright spot offensively off the bench, scoring a team-high 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
  • A layup by Stanford gave the Owls their largest lead of the game at 18-10, before UNT finished the half on a 17-9 run.
  • Berry briefly gave Temple a lead to start the second half, and his driving basket knotted the score at 32-32 with 18:01 to go.
  • UNT would score the next 11 points to take control of the game, with Atin Wright tallying five during the run.
  • The Owls continued to fight, with a three-point play by Jamal Mashburn Jr. pulling the visitors to within four at 48-44.
  • Temple cut the North Texas lead to four five times over a seven-minute stretch but could not get over the hump as the Mean Green hit a number of key buckets to fend the Owls off.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Berry's 24 points eclipse his prior career high of 19, set last week against No. 18 Memphis.
  • Stanford closed with 17 points and added six rebounds for the Owls. Mashburn Jr. had 16 points but struggled from the floor, connecting on just 5-of-23 attempts.
  • North Texas had a 42-28 advantage in points in the paint, and also became just the fourth team this season to have its bench outscore Temple's reserves (38-21).
  • UNT's Brenen Lorient was a key reason for both of those advantages, as he scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench.
UP NEXT
  • Temple continues its road trip on Saturday, Jan. 25 with a matchup against UTSA.
  • Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET (ESPN+).
