PHILADELPHIA – Temple Football head coach K.C. Keeler announced his first hire, introducing Clayton Barnes as his General Manager. The two worked together at Sam Houston State for the past five years.
"It was very important for me to bring Clayton to Temple," said Keeler. "He was a big reason for the success we had at Sam Houston. He's already hit the ground running here at Temple. We agree on the type of student-athletes it takes to build a successful program."
As General Manager, Barnes will be entrusted with building and maintaining the roster through all aspects of player acquisition including scouting, recruiting, and player retention.
Barnes was given the title General Manager at SHSU after joining Keeler's staff as the Director of Football Operations and Player Personnel in 2020. He spent the previous seven years in various coaching roles throughout Texas and Georgia.
At Sam Houston he was in charge of evaluating potential recruits, and the management of the team's roster and scholarships. He also coordinated the day-to-day operations for the team, including planning team travel and meals, organizing and promoting camps and managing the student intern program.
Before returning to Sam Houston, he spent the 2019 season as an offensive graduate assistant coach at Georgia Southern, and prior to that spent two years at Texas State where he was the Director of Player Development/Graphic Design following a one-year stint as an offensive quality control coach for the Bobcats in 2016.
Barnes initially broke into the college ranks as an offensive intern at Sam Houston in 2015. He also was a volunteer assistant football coach at A&M Consolidated High School from 2013-15 while he was a student at Texas A&M.
He earned a bachelor's degree in sports management at Texas A&M in 2015.
