Dante Atton Named to Ray Guy Award List for Week 9

PHILADELPHIA – Junior punter Dante Atton has been named to the Week 8 Ray Guy Award list as one of 'Ray's 8' after Temple's 38-37 overtime win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Named for football's premier punter – this award honors the nation's best collegiate punter in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner are net punting average, percentage of punts inside the 20-yard line, and percentage of punts not returned, with particular emphasis placed on net punting average.

Atton had five punts totaling 214 yards for an average of 42.8 yards per punt against Tulsa. The junior had four punts land inside the 20, including one that forced the Golden Hurricane to take a knee to go to overtime. He kept the field position in the Owls' favor with punts to the 2- and 11-yard line in the fourth quarter.

Atton has been a key contributor for the Owls, and he is turning heads each and every week. Going into Temple's week four contest against Georgia Tech, head coach Brenty Key made it a point to tell the announcers how much of a weapon Atton is. "The punter [Atton] is the team's most dangerous guy," said Key. Key understood how much variety Atton has to his game. The Owls allow Atton to use direction and spin on the football to pin teams deep and cause chaos on any punt he hits. Atton has pinned the opposing offense within their own 20-yard line 13 times this season through seven games, which is sixth in the American Conference.
