Temple Falls to Tulsa after Late Golden Hurricane Run

2.12.25 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Despite holding a nine-point lead midway through the second half, the Temple University men's basketball team could not keep pace with a red-hot shooting performance from Tulsa, falling 80-74 on Wednesday evening inside the Liacouras Center.

The Owls (14-11, 6-6 AAC) suffer a setback in American Athletic Conference play, while the Golden Hurricane (10-15, 4-8 AAC) snap their losing streak with the road victory.

Making his return after missing the South Florida and Memphis matchups due to injury, Jamal Mashburn Jr. led five Temple players in double figures with 19 points.

How It Happened

  • Temple held a 10-9 lead at the first media timeout before seizing momentum with a 12-2 run, extending its advantage to 18-11. Tulsa responded, cutting the deficit to one at 20-19, but the Owls countered with another surge, taking a game-high 11-point lead (32-21). During the stretch, Temple made 6-of-9 shots, held Tulsa to just two free throws, and forced two turnovers.
  • The Golden Hurricane closed the first half strong, finishing on a 13-3 run to trim Temple's lead to 35-34 heading into the break.
  • After intermission, the Owls came out firing, making their first five field goals and both 3-point attempts in the opening three minutes, extending their lead to 49-40.
  • Tulsa steadily chipped away, cutting the deficit to four (56-52). After Temple pushed the lead back to nine with a layup and three free throws, the Golden Hurricane took control, ripping off a 13-0 run to take a 65-61 lead with 6:08 remaining.
  • Mashburn Jr. and Quante Berry momentarily lifted Temple back in front by two, but Tulsa's hot shooting continued, as the Golden Hurricane converted their final four field goal attempts and made 5-of-7 free throws late to seal the victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Mashburn Jr. took time to find his rhythm after returning from injury, scoring 15 of his 19 points in the second half. The Miami native finished 4-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line in the final 20 minutes, while also dishing out a season-high six assists—all in the second half.
  • Steve Settle III was one rebound shy of his fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and nine boards.
  • Berry (16), Babatunde Durodola (10), and Elijah Gray (10) joined Mashburn Jr. and Settle III in double figures.
  • Tulsa's second-half shooting proved to be the difference, as the Golden Hurricane improved from 39.4% in the first half to 72% (18-of-25) in the second half.
  • Temple suffered its first home loss of the season, snapping a 10-game winning streak at the Liacouras Center. It marked just the sixth time in program history that the Owls started a season 10-0 on their home floor.
